I'm on this crazy 80s music kick lately for some reason. Anyone have any good suggestions for bands that I should check out? I've already got Tears for Fears, A Flock of Seagulls, and Simple Minds.

Thats like 1/1000th of what you should have. Expect to get flammed -- Google is better for this than 2+2

Huey Lewis and the News
The Alan Parsons Project

The Cars, Talking Heads (both started in late 70s but are considered 80s bands I believe)

Oh yeah, I do have a Cars CD too.

Yep, flame on with that one.

But to start you off:

New Order
Kraftwerk
Grandmaster Flash

OK, bored now.

Hall and Oates
Depeche Mode
The Cure
ABC
Night Ranger
basically look up the whole soundtrack from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Can you be more specific as to what you are looking for? Do you want good 80's music, or cheesy corny laughable 80's music?

Sonic Youth
My Bloody Valentine
GNR

OK, it would appear we are talking about new wave, and not rock or punk.

In that vein, I would suggest the first three Cure albums, the first two Depeche Mode releases, and everything from The Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, and Dead Can Dance.

Are Beastie boys and Run DMC 80's? If so, they need to be in.

Check out this post over the weekend in the Replacements thread, a great list of underated but great 80's bands.

80's music (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=3613935&page=&view=&s b=5&o=&vc=1)

I would suggest: X, Violent Femmes, The Cult, The Cars.

I'd suggest picking up the Living In Oblivion series and the series from Rhino that I can't recall the name of. Find what you like and work your way back to the albums from there.

Ever notice that what now passes for '80s music was rarely played on the radio back then, unless you happened to live in a college town? Try picking up a Top 40 list from that era. Of course the same thing can be said about the '60s, what is listened to now is not what was popular then. So there is hope Britney et al will fade away.

Billy Squier
Thomas Dolby
The Go Go's
Devo

I recommend the Vice City soundtrack box set. It helps if you also have fond memories of the game, but there's a lot of good [censored] on there. (or if you aren't as lazy as me, look up the songs and buy the albums they're on)
