I was reading about the N.S.W. (Australian State) Poker Championships, and an interesting idea is being trialed (I'm not sure if it has been done before). To me it would be good for the regular small tournaments run at most card rooms...anyway here is the exerpt from the press release at www.pokernetwork.com (http://www.pokernetwork.com):

<font color="blue">
MULTI LEVEL BUY-IN TOURNAMENT
A new concept in poker tournaments will be trialed during the A.P.A. championships.
In an effort to cater for a variety of bankrolls all players will be given the option of paying an extra $300 per entry for the 1st 4 tournaments and the extra funds will form a supplementary prize pool. In keeping with the desire shown in the past by the bigger players to condense the payouts, the 2nd prizepool will only pay top 3 finishers.

HERE IS A RUNDOWN OF HOW IT WILL OPERATE:

All players will be given a button which will be on display in front of them at all times which will identify them as having paid the extra $300. (We are sure players will understand the importance of this).

A simple example of prizepool and results would look like this.

50 entries:
30 @ $500 and 20 @ $200.

Prize Pool A = 50 entrants x $200 = $10,000
Prize Pool B = 30 entrants x $300 ($500 - $200) = $9,000

Payout looks like this: (example only - no 5% for points score deducted)

Prizepool A = $10,000
1st 40% = $4,000
2nd 20% = $2,000
3rd 15% = $1,500
4th 8% = $800
5th 5% = $500
6th 4% = $400
7th 3% = $300
8th 2.5% = $250
9th 2.5% = $250
Total for Prizepool A 100% = $10,000

Prizepool B = $9,000
1st 50% = $4,500
2nd 30% = $2,700
3rd 20% = $1,800
Total for Prizepool B 100% = $9,000

Sample Results:
1st Ben A. ($200 entrant – Pool A only) collects $4,000
2nd Bendigo ($200 entrant – Pool A only) collects $2,000
3rd Gofor ($200 entrant – Pool A only) collects $1,500
4th Sam $500 entrant – Pool A and B) collects $800+ $4,500(1st B pool) = $5,300
5th Gary $500 entrant – Pool A and B) collects $500+ $2,700(2nd B pool) = $3,200
6th Maurie P ($200 entrant – Pool A only) collects $400
7th Mike I ($500 entrant – Pool A and B) collects $300 + $1,800 = $2,100
8th Joe M ($500 entrant - Pool A and B) collects $250 + $nil
9th John M. ($200 entrant - Pool A only) collects $250
Total paid out = $19,000 (total of both pools)

A tournament that caters for all bankrolls could be a great idea.

Very interesting. This could lead to some very complicated strategic decisions once in / near the money.

it would also lead to cheating and collusion. as the players at the end could be playing for vastly different prize funds.

BINGO!! Ray,

Keeryst!!!.....The big side bet last-longers and parlays that some groups of players create in some of the bigger tourns are virtually impossible to weed out....

Add this to it, and , goddam!!! U'll never REALLY know who your playing against &amp; what's at stake!!

Well, I once played in a cash game with "overs". It was in Lake Tahoe, 6-12 HE and there were 2 or 3 players who had a big button in front of them, which meant that they were allowed to play higher (10/20), if there was nobody else in the pot no more. I was one of the players with this button. To tell the truth, I never did get used to this "structure". I think I quit after about an hour.

I understand, that this structure isn´t qite the same as in the tourney mentioned, still I think that because of that experience I wouldn´t want to play in this tourney.
