Saw a blurb on CNN about how the Mayor wants to turn a part of New Orleans into a mini Vegas to get the city back on it's feet quickly. Obviously he hasn't been to AC. Sounds like it could be a good idea. thoughts??

Is there a chance the track could bend?

I think that given the condition of NOLA before Katrina, there isn't a whole lot of rebuilding that could be done which would make it worse.

I think that NOLA would be a great location for a mini-vegas since it already has such a reputation as a party city, and is now ripe for massive redevelopment.

they should either have it or they should not, but saying it isn't legal and then having several riverboat casino's perma-parked along the harbor is pretty stupid, IMO.

Clearly the people in NO want gambling so why not let them have it?

Harrah's has the exclusive right to have a land-based casino in New Orleans and pays $60 million per annum for that privilege. Setting up casinos in the larger hotels would infringe on Harrah's monopoly, which Harrah's may or may not agree to. The reaction to Nagin's proposal has so far been very negative. As a displacee, I think that NO needs to look to non-tourist-based businesses/industries as the re-building process goes forward.

And the riverboat casinos are not in the "harbor."

Well, New Orleans can start by making the levees Cat 5 strength. Building them back to Cat 3 strength by next June is pretty stupid as far as I'm concerned. The Army Corps of Engineers say they don't have enough money to build them any stronger. This country is so stupid, makes me want to move to Canada.

yeah, but ac was nothing before it became a "mini vegas". new orleans is already a party place so the big gambling would fall into place.
