The first card will always be a color. Then it's 12-C-2 divided by 51-C-2. Or am I overlooking?

An all-(your color) flop is 8.5:1 against, and they're paying 8 for 1 (aka 7:1)

If I understood this (http://www.partypoker.com/games/how_to_play/side_bets.html) correctly, the house edge is a whopping 17.65%. Combined with a max bet of $10, I can't imagine that anyone will ever win enough to play it more than once.

Uglyowl
10-08-2005, 08:08 PM
I calculate the odds of hitting at 8.5/1 giving the house a 5.9% edge.

Those greedy bastards! A group could collude to gain an edge though /images/graemlins/smile.gif

1/((26/52) * (25/51) * (24/50))= 1 in 8.5 chance.

While I know this probably isn't going to make it +EV or anything I wonder how much the odds change when you're holding (for example) two red cards and betting on black? It will take someone smarter than me to figure it out.

EDIT: I guess you have to place your wager before the hand is dealt, so nevermind...although I'm still curious what the odds would be.

Because in case you and a few of your friends shared card color information you could gain a very large edge (think Omaha for instance). My prediction is this feature will be discontinued fairly soon.

It's 1 in 8.5 if you don't know any of the cards, so the house edge is 6.5%.

If you are in the game, and have 2 cards of the same color, the odds the flop will be all the other color is about 1 in 7.5, so you have the advantage.

I hope this clears things up. Here is party's EV for $1 wagered on red (black is the same):

P(all red) = (26/52)*(25/51)*(24/50) = 2/17 = 1/8.5
Payoff: -$7
P(not all red) = 1 - P(all red) = 7.5/8.5
Payoff: +$1

EV: (1/8.5)*(-$7) + (7.5/8.5)*(+$1) = +$0.05(8823)

I just had an idea for something they could add to the sidebet bar, maybe only at certain tables, that would increase their rake and increase action at the tables. They should compile information for probability of each hand winning based on number of players to the flop and then offer a bet on you winning the hand. For example, let's say they find that J8o has a 21% chance of winning against 5 players. Just before the flop, they could offer you the option of betting on yourself at something like 3.5:1. You'd have like 3 seconds before the flop to decide or you could "auto-bet". You'd be sure to see increased action. The only problem would be collusion. Hmmm, that could be a major problem, but I still think it's a million dollar idea.

If you use a 4-color deck, your odds of winning are even worse.

After thinking about this a little more, I think they'd have to make it so all players would have to take the bet on every hand. That way, there wouldn't be collusion and they'd get the same number of hands in per hour. It would eliminate the profitability potential for winning players (since they'd opt out of the bet), but I think it would still be good for Party.

true. the point i was trying to make is that the rate is not constant. it MIGHT be 8 for 1, it might be more/less. the verbage in their FAQ regarding this question makes this pretty clear. just thought i'd throw it out there fwiw (not much /images/graemlins/wink.gif)

[/ QUOTE ]

This is a sidebet you'd take every hand, say for $1 (although I'd make it so you could set the bet size). Say, for instance, Party compiles all of the hands from its history and determines that there is a 35% chance you'll win with KQo in late position vs 3 opponents. If that's the case, the breakeven odds would be 65:35, or 1.86:1. They'd decide on a certain house edge (if they were wise, they wouldn't make it too high -- a slow bleed is best), then offer the bet to the player. If they decided on 1.75:1, they would offer "$2.75 for $1". If the player bet $10, they'd "win" $27.50, for example.

Anyway, my mind is just wandering. Maybe this wouldn't work, but I'm sure there are other ideas that would.

yeah, this is right.. I just tested this out with a $1 bet and when i hit, i got $8 back (7:1).

You guys who are using probabilities have this wrong. The odds are actually 7.5:1.. I was crapping my pants at first, thinking this was an oversight on party's part, until I realized it's 8 FOR 1. BUMMMMER.

odds:

(52 c 3) - (26 c 3) : (26 c 3)

52 x 51 x 50/3 x 2 x 1 = 22100 total flops

26 x 25 x 24/3 x 2 x 1 = 2600 one color (red or black) flops

odds: (22100-2600):2600 or 7.5:1

Dear Party Poker,

Please make the new sidebet bar & the black jack link go away. I find them annoying and distracting. They also make multi-table with overlap more of a pain...

UATrewqaz
10-08-2005, 11:22 PM
Party Poker's crack software development team (I have a degree in CS and work as a software developer so I can make fun of them) has made it such that by removing (or simply renaming) the image files associated with the links they no longer appear.

When you load up the table there is probably a seperate sub-function that loads the blackjack and sidebet stuff, but when it cannot find the necessary files to do so those subfunctions fail, but do not cause the main function to error out.

They could have just as easily made it so that you got some generic "cannot find necessary file(s), please reinstall the software error"

Other sites (Poker Stars) operate like this, which is why you can't skin Poker Stars.

The chances of you winning with this hand if all your opponents stay in until the river is different than the chances of winning this hand if you are able to drive out an opponent or two (perhaps holding an ace or something) with a raise or C/R.

It seems that your little idea depends on everyone staying in the hand...and obviously a good player should have an advantage here in driving out their opponents.
