Anyone know why increasing the refresh rate of your monitor decreases eyestrain? What exactly is the refresh rate anway?

Basically the refresh rate is how many times the image is drawn on screen per second. So like a 70 khz refresh rate means that the image is drawn 70 times every second. If it goes slower you see flickering, which is why you get eyestrain. I don't know the physiological reasons behind flickering leading to eyestrain.

LCD's don't update in the same way that a crt monitor would. A lcd stays the same until it changes color, but a crt needs a high refresh rate since it has to draw everything over again even if it's all the same color.

Just by having an LCD you are far above any refresh rate on a CRT.

I don't know about the eye strain issue, but be careful when you change the rate, if it's not an ok rate for your monitor (CRT anyway) you can break it.

Surely the computer would not allow you to set such a setting that it would break it?

if you get "reforce" (google it), it will show you what each resolution of your monitor is capable of.

it will also let you reduce or increase (up to the max or you could have problems) the rate at each res.

I have a CRT set at the highest allowable refresh rate but still experience eyestrain and headaches after 3 hours or so. Do you believe switching to an LCD would help...?

Possibly XP figures this out, but you could on older OSes and if you are tricky enough you probably can on XP too.

I'm looking stuff up. Wikipedia says old monitors can be damaged by setting a refresh rate too high, but most new monitors won't try and will tell you it's too high. So I guess it's on the monitor, not the computer.

I have a 2001fp, and when i first checked i could not change the rate above 60hz. However, after seeing this post my curiosity was sparked again and i went and checked a second time, and i am able to switch it to 75hz max -- when the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" IS Checked.

I have no idea why this is. The only thing I did different was change it from the standard VGA cable to the DVI cable, which may be the reason, but i am ignorant of such things.

I blew up a perfectly good CRT monitor running Win 3.1 with a bogus graphics setting. The image on the screen spilt in half, duplicated on each side. Then there was a bright flash. Finally, a single bright line down the middle. I seriously doubt XP, or even Win 95 would let you do something like that though.

the 2001fp isn't really all that special. It's a good deal in the US, but that's pretty much it. If you want quality there are tons of better displays out there.
