Every job I've had since I was 18 has involved sitting in front of a computer with Internet access. Kind of sad that I can't even imagine doing 8 solid hours of nonstop work. As for what people did pre-Internet, I guess shoot the bull with each other, talk to wife/girlfriend on phone, etc. I could ask my dad, who has worked in offices for the past 30 years. Recently, though, even he has been online a lot at work.

Read newspaper/magazine, listen to walkman, daydream, can always find ways not to do work.

Work...and try to figure out WTF to do if you happened to finish up early. I had the (dis)pleasure of working for a big defense contractor in the late 80s, and a lot of my menial job was done at a PC XT. /images/graemlins/blush.gif No network, lots of paper mail. Awful.

this is kind of a hijack, but whatever -

My job recently blocked ALL internet access at work (except for the company homepage). The blocking is being done by something called "Websense", does anyone know how/if I can get around this?

I work for a state government and they use Websense. The way it's set up for us is that they block or restrict certain things. They give you a certain amount of time per day to access "restricted" sites (like sports, entertainment, web-based email, etc), which you can use in time blocks (so you want to make sure you open as many pages as possible before the session runs out /images/graemlins/smile.gif). The "blocked" catagory includes things like gambling (and 2+2 by extension /images/graemlins/frown.gif) and porn. By the looks of it your company put almost everything in the "blocked" catagory.

It's not that hard to get around it, at least for me. Some sites don't even get caught by the filter. If you can access google, you can open up the cached webpage and that will get you around the filter. However, it seems like you can't get to google so I don't know if this will work for you.

Figured out how to network chat on the mainframe OS (MVS).

You could probably set up Remote Desktop (via Windows XP) and just surf the web from your home computer. It's very unlikely that they would block the RD ports, and it would get past the anemic web filters that most companies use.

Or they could do the work they're supposed to be doing and not break the rules that were set in place.
