Growing up, my parents told me that they found me under a bridge. They told my younger brother and sister similar stories. That is to say, we are not your biological parents; we discovered you.

All of my friends of slanty-eyed Asian ancestry were told a story along the same lines by their parents. Yours?

Wait, what?

I'm being EXTREMELY dense here, but which of the following was this?

1) a way of explaining where babies come from
2) a childhood "joke"
3) the admission that you were adopted
4) a cultural euphemism for the fact that you were actually born to your parents

what generation are you. what flavor (sweet sour, kal-bi, nice presentation, but bland flavor, fish sauce, etc)? I wasn't told this, but I'm yon-jin, and even my grandparents couldn't speak fluently (they had perfect english and a kind of broken jap-lish that others of their generation could understand, but that formally trained and native japanese speakers couldn't figure out).

I've heard of it from other slant eyeds. I think it's said by a parent when the child does something that is less than stellar or which the parents don't approve. kind of a "you didn't come from my gene pool" thing.

Good question. Everyone I know in this group, myself included, has parents who were foreign born.

Wow, I've never heard this before. My parents just told me we were poor.

They basically avoided all talk of sex, childbirth, etc. I learned everything I know about reproduction from porn.

When I was in middle school, my sister was diagnosed with ADD, which I subsequently learned was influenced by genetics. So I tried to claim that I was ADD too, and then one night when I couldn't focus on my homework and my parents were telling me to hurry up and finish it, I spouted out that it's not my fault that I have screwy genes.

They weren't too pleased about that one.

I was left by gypsies, or at least that's what my older sisters told me.

I'm the youngest and only son in my Korean family. I am the king of the family, my parents would never say something like this.

No. All you guys do is eat spam.

Seriously though - common sentiment I've heard from fellow East Coast Asians - "I've never met a stupid Asian person until I moved to CA..."

Theory - Smarter Asians able to find their way across the country. Dumber ones just stopped once they hit land.

I'm Korean and grew up in Ohio. I vaguely remember my parents telling me they found me in a supermarket shopping cart, and that they found me brother somewhere else. I don't think we ever believed them though.
