wonder if she was using her government issued credit card like the people did that bought prostitutes and breast implants!! jesus people....unreal

the fact she stuck $20 in a MACHINE (which i wont even do and i usually live pretty comfortably) says she wasnt BARELY making it...with the way shes spending money and how retarded she is that ~1 million after taxes wont last her over a year....

i know some religious people gamble and dont look down on it but the majority are against it...so the fact they prayed and thier "prayers" were answered by gambling cracks me up let alone the fact they stated this

hopefully she invests right, doesnt go on a speading spree and it last her - if it does good for her

Excuse me. Katrina or no Katrina, we are still US citizens, and we are entitled to spend our maoney any way we please, as long as our choices are legal. I can tell you that this has been a terrific emotional strain for all evacuees, and if this lady and her sister want to have a little R&R at a casino, it's none of your damned business to pass judgment.

I am sure as hell not going to submit all of my post-Katrina purchases for your approval. No doubt you would find some of them frivolous.

BTW most of us are sitting in limbo. We can't move back, we can't rebuild, we can't bulldoze, we can't sell, we can't do anything until the insurance industry, FEMA, and local governments start making some decisions, issuing checks and building permits, revising building codes, deciding which areas will be seized by eminent domain, and so on.

I'm sitting here in Las Vegas, and if under the circumstances I decide to have a little fun by playing the slots or (more to my taste) going to see the Chippendales, I'll thank you to keep your sanctimonious nose out of it.

Sure, terrific emotional strain is a good explanation for bad decision-making. I can accept that. IMO, it's still bad decision-making. Gambling with money you can't afford to lose (and based on the article I'm making an assumption), is dumb.

Yes, you are making a bad assumption. You have no way of knowing whether or not she could afford to lose $20. The majority of evacuees are middle class people who can afford $20 for an evening's amusement. That's an absolute drop in the bucket when it comes to the loss of a half-million dollar house (given that flood insurance has a $250,000 cap). Twenty dollars one way or another doesn't mean a damned thing. Would you bitch if she spent $20 to take herself to the movies? Or to a local club to socialize with some friendly people? Or to buy herself some earrings to wear to church?

Do you really expect us not to spend a penny except on food and shelter? And I suppose we better not spend our food money on coke and pizza and beer--just on mac and cheese and red beans and rice and peanut butter and jelly.

The media concentrated on the poor people in the Superdome, but that does not reflect the reality of the range of people affected.

[/ QUOTE ]

You know, I get what you're saying about assumptions and people jumping to conclusions and all that. And maybe you're right about people being too harsh.

But in some respects, I see where people are coming from. The media did focus on the poorest, and an unfathomable* amount of money has been donated by the public, and then comes a story that someone who may have been on the recieving end of that was sticking it in a slot machine.

*I say "unfathomable" because I don't know how much it is, and it's a lot.

So yeah, on the face, people jump to conclusions and that's bad. But personally, and maybe it's hard to make the distinction, I do take issue with people gambling with the money the government gave them. I don't know the deal, and so it's all generalities, but let me put it this way: if it came to light that the woman was broke, didn't have anything, and was gambling with government money, Yes, I believe that would be crap.

Is she supposed to eat rice and beans and not buy anything? No, of course not. But at least tangibles leave you with something - slots eventually leave you with nothing.

And aren't there some restrictions on the money? A friend of mine who also evacuated and is now in the area said his checks, I guess from FEMA, can not be used for some items. Maybe it's debit cards that were supplied? I have few facts, but I know that he told me that thought he could hypothetically afford it, he is not allowed to use the money to buy electronic items, and so on...

So yeah, maybe people got angry to quick, and maybe the woman can afford it, and so on. But if she's getting money from the government and sticking it in a slot machine, well, that sucks. That's stupid. That's my opinion. I don't want to be an [censored] about it, and we don't have facts here, and so you can say "maybe she's middle class and fine" and hell, maybe she was rich to start with, but if hypothetically speaking she's taking government money for disaster relief how about not sticking it in a machine programmed to keep 5% of every dime you drop.

Buy the earrings. Makes more sense to me.

What is pathetic and sickening is that she hit the jackpot on the Wheel of Fortune machine. How long have I been saying that is the machine to play? How many times have I laughed at all the idiots playing MegaBucks when they should be playing the awesome Wheel of Fortune machines? If only I had more time in Vegas, this would have been mine. Wheel of Fortune has ALWAYS been my slots game. What BS that I didn't win it.

Did she win it off of the $2,000 debit card?

[/ QUOTE ]

According to CNN, the woman who won at the slots was, as I suspected, middle class, a retired librarian. That means that she has pension income which she earned and which she is free to do with as she pleases. Again according to CNN, she put $4.25 in the machine--and she won her jackpot. This has nothing whatever to do with $2000 debit cards. In fact, very few people got debit cards, and the debit cards did have a few restrictions as to how they could be used. Everyone who gave FEMA a bank account number got a direct deposit (as I did), and that money could be used in any way the recipient saw fit.

Ms. Sherman was as free to make a -EV bet with her own money as you all are to lose your money to people who are smarter than you are and play better poker than you do.

Some of you are sure judgmental little busybodies who jump to conclusions based on stereotypes fed you by the media. (I realize that I am depending on CNN to be accurate about Ms. Sherman's occupation, but I think they can probably handle that kind of straightforward information with reasonable accuracy.) The fact that she was staying with family told me that it was more than likely that she was middle class with funds of her own. The destitute were more likely to be in public shelters.

The seventeen quarters were not public tax money, so get over it.
