Well, much to the delight of most posters Platoon did not make it through to the final. Personally I'm a bit sad it wasn't a closer race in the Das Boot matchup, but whatever.

Your two contenders...

Both good films, but Apocalypse Now needs to win this one.

When the 1st round brackets were posted, I predicted this final match-up. Toss up for me........AN by a nose.

AN is by leaps and bounds a better and more influenctial film than FMJ. No contest here.

For those who complian that AN isnt a real war movie, remember that AN has far more footage of battle scenes than FMJ. Both are sketchy on their war content andboth have higher meanings than all those dumbass john wayne flicks. In summary, if you like FMJ better get over yourself and vote for thecorrct choice, AN.

that's the only reason FMJ got this far. i'm a kubrick fan big time and have all his films, but FMJ just does not deserve to be even in the top 4 war movies.

das boot is the best movie. if it had some macho lines (like FMJ) or some Doors music, then you stoners would have voted for it.

Personally I feel all of the following are greater movies than either of these two:

Paths of Glory
Bridge on the River Kwai
Das Boot
Glory
The Deerhunter

I ended up voting for Apocalypse Now since I consider it a better all around complete movie than FMJ. Now, which one would I and do I watch more frequently? Easily FMJ, which shows that I have bad taste I guess.

I give it to AN only on the strength of the redux version. I never liked the movie that much until I saw it on the big screen for the redux release a couple of years ago.

I'm saddened to see a movie that isn't even a war movie winning the "greatest war movie of all time" honor.

Come on now, what would you classify these movies as if not war? If you had the following classification options and you could only choose one: comedy, horror, action, drama, war, sci-fi, squirrel porn.

Personally I'd pick the war category for both of our finalists, as well every other movie in this entire poll.

Wow, what results. How could anyone watch these two movies and come to the conclusion that Full Metal Jacket is the better movie?

I'm really curious.

You are absolutely right. I will add Platoon to that list too. But the helicopter sequence in AN and the first part of FMJ have no equals.

Of course, I don't think the "Battle for Algiers" was a choice, so this poll is seriously flawed.

The movie is about internal struggle, set to a war(ish) backdrop.

It isn't about war itself. But whatever, I don't really care. Kuddos for doing this poll series though.

Well put.

I was lucky enough to see Das Boot in an old theater that no longer exists (one aisle, with just four rows of seats on each side). That long and narrow theater really intensified the movie's claustrophobic setting.

Unfortunately most people see this film for the first time without subtitles; the overdubbed version, which absolutely destroys this film. The characters are completely stripped of their personalities (it's like watching a Godzilla movie in that respect).

P.S. A movie that I would have liked to have seen in the first round of voting: The Red Badge of Courage (1951) Directed by: John Huston, and staring Audie Murphy as the main character.

Yes. It is a retelling of Conrad's "The Heart of Darkness." The WAR is incidental to the story, but not THE FILM. A.N. is/was able to work dual purposes. Therefore, it IS a war movie, and a damn good one.

However, I am impartial to THE LONGEST DAY ... especially after reading Steven Abrose's "D-Day." He backs up a lot of the athenticity of THE LONGEST DAY. The part where the marine private is playing craps is a true story. The guy won something like $5,500.

Anyway, THE LONGEST DAY also had many historical tidbits that were interesting as well as some awesome action scenes. Imagine if that movie were made today with modern special effects.

As far as war films go ... its BAND of BROTHERS. No contest.

FULL METAL JACKET. Can't take this poll seriously. The first part is an all time classic, however, the story ... loses a story once it goes to Vietnam. Just a mixed bag of observations.

Yeah, up through the scene where the Criminal Intent genius blows his brains out, FMJ is incredible. But ultimately, the movie falls short of a masterpiece.

It's actually pretty damn unclear you are treating the two differently, being that you bring up Band of Brothers, the mini series, in a thread about war movies. I guess I'm curious as to your specific definition of the word "film" in this instance.

Film = All inclusive. This would include documentaries, mini-series, movies, ect. In other words, the term "film" includes all movies that were subject to your contest.

Movie is a one-shot, discreet production. I am using movie as we commonly understand it to be ... something that we would go to the movie theater to watch. In other words, the term "movie" is narrower than film and does not include documentaries, mini series, etc.

Sorry to ruin your thread.

May have been said before but...

FMJ might be the best boot camp movie of all time but the war segment is far behind the pack.
