If you had a budget of between $50K-60K out the door...what car would you get? No kids, no weather concerns, leaning toward 4 seats, but 2 seats if it's cool enough.

can the 50-60k be used as a down payment instead?

in that case it would be a ferrari, otherwise it would be a ford escort and the extra would be used for hookers and beer.

I live in South Florida near Ft. Lauderdale and rich Pemborke Pines is around the corner. You'll find Hummers and SUVs driving abound as much as the Beetle back in the day. They are everywhere. Just recently pulled up to a shopping plaza and counted SEVEN Different SUVs (the only cars leaving at that time) lined up at a red light exiting the plaza. My mother owns a 330ci, and I've fallen in love with convertibles. So I might just have to save my money for the M3 vert.

If your budget is that much why settle for a compact car? Unless you really value the super performance aspect of it, an M3 is so silly to get when you can get pretty damn solid performance with a mid sized import. Go for an A6, Mercedes E class or BMW 5-series. If performance is that important I'd still pick a Corvette Z06 over an M3.

I would personally get the newest, lowest mileage Supra TT that I could find. After I found one that I liked, drop some of the money that I saved and get some basic performance upgrades for it along with some good looking wheels. You could get some aero parts for it as well, and still be around/under budget.

M3, C6, C5 Z06, modded G35/350z all fit the bill as well.

thats the straight truth.

take 50K. say you buy a BMW. well, you drive it out of the lot and it had lost value. then since you are young you will be paying a premium on insurance. add in the possibility of expensive repairs and the actual cost comes to well over 50K, and you are getting an asset in return which is guaranteed to be worth considerably less than 50K.

now say you invest that 50K... you will gain money... and then you will gain money on the money that you gain... and so on.

I'm not saying "never buy a 50K car". Not at all. But I think most young people (not that I'm anywhere near old) don't really how much that car will actually cost. There are a lot of young poker players (I know several personally) who want to and are buying 50K cars and it's a monumentally stupid decision. The dynamics of having poker as an income are unique, but regardless.

If you want to buy a nice car, can afford it, and have money to invest as well, more power to you. Enjoy the ride. But there are a lot of young people who shouldnt be spending that much on cars. You do see my point about how for a lot of young people dont realize how expensive it is and shouldnt do it?

I was always a fan of the BMW 330ci coupe. I dont own one, but Ive always had a soft spot for them.

[/ QUOTE ]

those cars are extra ragged. the maintainence on BMW's is unreal. plus shop time is like 150 bucks an hour....do yourself a favor and do not buy this car.

ive owned a pre-owned m3 for almost 2 years not and have yet to have to do a "major" repair on it yet, only thing that ive had to redo is the brakes which after all said and done was only around 900...so the upkeep on these cars arent what everyone blows them up to be

three of my friends have the 330. all bought brand new. when i say maintanence, a 900 dollar brake problem is precisely what i am referring to. a few examples from my friends cars.....(there were several warranty repairs, but my examples are all post warranty) brakelight malfunction: 500 dollars; passenger window came off-track, 475; rear leather stitching came apart, 900ish; and the list goes on. bear in mind all three were purchased brand new, this doesnt include no less than six flat tires on ONE car due to low profile tires on sprt package, and more maintanence issues. just my opinion on the brand.

Yeah, only spending 900 bucks on a break job is a great deal.

I have a bud that had that bodystyle BMW (E36), and he would DIY his brakes for no more than $150.

If you are willing to buy a used car, the E39 M5 is a great car. I recently sold my NSX and wanted a sports car but with less flash. After a single test drive of the M5, I bought one. It's faster than the NSX (and most sports cars). It's handling is impressive (it's obviously not as good as a 2 seat purpose built sports car but amazing none the less) and it's practical. It is a very stealthy car which I really like. It's fun to pull up next to a C5 corvette and be able to keep up with it (or out run it based on the driver). It runs away from the boxster (even the S models). You can certainly get one in this range or quite a bit less.

In the end, you have to decide what you want but the M5 is a great car depending on what you want.

If getting a Lotus then getter the faster Exige, but if going for a muscle car like those I would go for a TVR.

Anyone else see this as a thinly veiled brag post?

If you are about to drop 50-60k on a car, I would think you would just get what you want and not listen to the reccomendations of some teenagers on the internet.

It's not like a set up a poll where I'm going to buy whatever people suggest. I've never been in the market for a car over $35K, so I'm unfamiliar with a lot that's out there. For instance, I never would have heard of a Lotus Elise had I not posted this question. A "brag" post would be more appropriate if I were looking for a car in the $80K+ range. I'm not looking to buy some supercar, just something that will be on the lower end of the luxury cars.

If I had a family, there's no way I'd be in the market. Right now I have no ties, aside from a girlfriend. I'm only "young" once and I know that I won't be looking for a sports car or convertible when my first child is on the way. For the record, none of the income that goes toward this will come from that unmentionable game. I play medium stakes, and have nowhere near the talent of most of the people here.
