View Full Version : Looking for a good restaurant in Boston

Saturday night is my 6th year anniversary. I'm looking for a great restaurant in Boston (or nearby..I live about 30 min north of the city). My wife and I are both steak lovers but also like pasta dishes...no seafood. We don't want to go anywhere that requires a suit but rather someplace where I feel I need to dress well (dress slacks and nice collared shirt). The 3 big things I'm looking for are: a great steak so you can cut it with a fork, atmosphere and service. We've been to Top of the Hub a couple times and was great. Now we're looking for something along those lines.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!
HEK

how do you feel about italian? does it have to be steak? the north end has a ton of good restaurants and that whole area would probably be considered romantic by most women. you could follow up the dinner with a walk down hanover st. over to the waterfront or faneuil hall

Good suggestions so far. Mortons is a safe bet, too. Right on Boylston st.

HEK - Boston does not have any local outstanding steakhouses like New York, most are the chains. Capital Grille is the best of the chains. The Metropolitan Club in Newton is independent and I have heard it is outstanding but I have not been there.

Good Eating!!

The Capital Grille in Chestnut Hill (Newton).

Great atmosphere, no tie required, awesome steak, sides, apps, everything.

Rialto (http://www.rialto-restaurant.com/) at the Charles in Harvard Square. The emphasis is not steak, but you will be able to find it on the menu with no problem, you will feel you need to be dressed well, and you will have a memorable anniversary dinner.

east coast grill in somerville has all around awesome food, a bit more laid back than the other two.

abe & louie's on boylston st has great steaks
capitol grille on newbury

what about the new place in the castle in park plaza, I forget what it's called but I have heard it is pretty good - and seems neat anyways. someone help me out here.

also for dessert go to finale in park plaza or harvard sq -- the wife will love it

yes, very good pastas, good wine selection. the website menu lists rib-eye actually, but i can't speak on it as i've never had it.

for Steak, you can't go wrong with these choices.
abe and louies
capital grille
grill 23
mortons

FYI: Hillop is a big step down from these but much cheaper.

Another vote for Capitol Grille...you really can't go wrong there.

For Italian, Cantina Italiana is fantastic.

Hiilltop is not a good suggestion.

Wow. You guys are awesome. So many choices. Damn do I love OOT! Next time I'll take YOU guys out for dinner /images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

Yeah the hilltop is bleh. Been there many times. Never tried Mortons...great rep so maybe that. But the website says that avg dinner for 2 is $175 depending on what drinks you order. That would probably mean like $250 w/tip if we order, say, 2 drinks (not big drinkers per se). Ouch. I don't mind spending good loot (I've had a very good week) but >$200 on food is still steep. It doesn't mean I haven't ruled it out yet though.

Everyone says Capial Grille and it also has a great reputation so that's in the running. Anyone know how it compares with Top of the Hub?

We've been to the North End many times so some other time even though Cantina is fantastic!

Grille 23? Eh, I donnu. Anyone been there? Someone tell me what it's like. I've heard about it but I guess I just don't like the name 'grille 23.' It sounds, I donnu, cheapish. Yeah, I know. I'm openminded /images/graemlins/grin.gif

So it looks like, for now, it's the Cap Grille, Morton's, Grille 23, Abe n Louis'. I'm leaning toward Mortons though since she's never been there and maybe has never heard of it. Something new is always cool.

Grill 23 is very similiar to Capital Grille in terms of food, ambience, and price. I've been a few times.

HEK-

Top of the Hub - is crap compared to the other suggestions - remember - Food quality X View quality is a Constant.

Of all the steak chains - I would rank Mortons in the bottom quartile.
