You may also want to consider switching browsers if your primary browser is IE. This isn't to say other browsers don't have issues, or to bash IE. There are several reasons for this, including unresolved publicly known security issues, being widely targeted for attacks due to popularity, and (typically) being the application that talks to the Internet the most.

I know you are asking about firewalls, but client side security is also important.

I agree, if you're really concerned you may want to use FireFox because it's less often a target of attacks.

As far as the firewall issue, do you have a router? If you router is configured correctly you don't really need a software firewall.

Ive got a router, Not sure how its configured to be honest.

i now have:
Zone alarm,
AntiVirus(norton)
Changed all passwords,
Allowed and checked all programs(Generic host process for win32/Live Update Engine COM/Common client User Session).

Scanned with Antivirus and it found 3trojans /images/graemlins/frown.gif Deleted them this morning and changed all passwords. I will be buying Norton internet security shortly as i think its best to protect fully using one software rather than 2.

Thanks all.

What browser you use? If you use Explorer, change it to Firefox. Download Firefox http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ Its much better and safer than Explorer.

Do you have any spyware cleaner? If not theres some.

Ad-Aware
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html

Spybot
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

Download both and scan you computer. Then remove everything what they found.

Here is some online scanners. You have to use Explorer when scan.
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

Scan with those online scanners and remove.

What kind of settings you have in Zonealarm? Here is some.
Firewall(in left side)
-Internet zone security HIGH
-Trusted Zone security MEDIUM
Alerts and logs
-Alert events shown OFF

Dont buy Norton internet security. You allready have virusprogram. Zonealarm is much better firewall than Norton. And its free.

Hope this help. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

And Remember get always updates when available. Do this and your computer is protected.

Look, it's not about accumulating all the security-related software you can discover. To be safe, you need to learn what it does and how to set it up. This "Ive got a router, Not sure how its configured to be honest" attitude is no good.

Do you understand how the Trojans got on there? It will almost certainly be something YOU actively did - opening email attachments, allowing ActiveX controls to download etc.

As with almost anything, there's no adequate substitute for actually learning about the subject in detail, and fortunately with this subject, that would only take a few hours of any intelligent person's time.
