This is quite the wrong idea...why bet small to see where you stand? If you're called you still have no idea, nor if you are raised, he could be raising you with A4o. Betting small is an indication of weakness.

If you wanted to find out where you stood, you should have bet more like half the pot, not 1/3rd the pot.
