View Full Version : Greatest Final Four Ever?

10-04-2005, 09:49 PM
Minh Ly - consistent very high stakes professional poker player.

Layne Flack - multiple WSOP bracelet winner. Highly respected pro.

Scotty Nguyen - Main Event WSOP winner and poker legend.

Doyle Brunson- poker hall of famer and legend.

Was there ever a greater final four? Not counting by invitation only tournaments.

Best show ever. You've gotta love Layne Flack goofing on Doyle while getting owned by him. Not even ESPN could ruin this one.

yeah it might be nice to have a couple more high stakes short handed events. seems the pros really play better in these spots.

The final four of the Season 1 Foxwoods WPT was Howard Lederer, Layne Flack, Andy Bloch, and Phil Ivey. The final four of the Season 1 Bellagio WPT was Gus Hansen, John Juanda, Freddy Deeb, and John Hennigan. That said, this tournament totally ruled, and I'm not saying either of the above are decisively better. They just come to mind.

As Sklansky pointed out in this forum, the initial field of 300 was very strong.

The short-handed format probably attracted and favored LAGs like Flack and Brunson.

It made a good show, not only all the big names, but Bunson not only won, he won fairly easily.

The overall prize pool was a million. Lederer actually won $263,850 for winning the PPMII.

Is this a smarter basis?

Top Main Event Finishes:
Bloch - off the board
Ivey - 10, 20, 23
Lederer - 5, 19, 133

Ly - 9, 19
Brunson - 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 16, 53
Nguyen - 1, 18

I repeat: Andy Block makes it too easy to dismiss that group. He's seems like a nice guy, but he needs more credentials than a Full Tilt jersey.

take all these guys back to when brunson could dominate and they'd have more padded careers too.

I really liked the Lederer/Flack/Bloch/Ivey match up on the WPT from a while back.

I was just told by a friend what the greatest final four ever was. He says it happened in the mid-1990s at the main event of the Four Queens tournament.

Chip Reese

T.J. Cloutier

Erik Seidel

Doyle Brunson

Does anyone have a link to this tournament? What year was it exactly?

It wasn't the basis for his arguement, it was a part of the comparison. Ivey has no main event wins, but he has 5 bracelets in other events.

Andy Bloch is a hack.

According to a reporter that extensively covered the WSOP, Layne didn't drink one thing containing alcohol in the entire month at the tables.

10-06-2005, 12:25 PM
he made beer ice cubes and swallowed them, effectively "eating" alcohol, not drinking it.
