Was betting with just top pair a risky move? should I have just check/called?

I never bet the flop here. I always prefer to check and see how the hand develops. Checking saves you chips when both players have monsters, playing turns OOP sucks, so I prefer to try to represent real strength with the check-raise.

would you re-raise at all here? if maybe half the pot was bet

If I was in bad shape chip wise I would fold pre-flop. In your case I might complete preflop. I would probably bet the flop as you did... maybe t175 (a little more than 3xbb). I doubt I bet turn, probably check it down, call a small bet. Your kicker is not so good so you need to be careful... keep pot small so you can get away from it. QJ will often make 2nd best hand...
