The official band name is just Pixies; but if you're going to refer them, it's often correct to use a lowercase 'the' preceding it -- e.g., "I am going to the Pixies concert tomorrow," just as you'd say "I am going to the Radiohead concert tomorrow."

Same goes for Beastie Boys; no official 'the' in their name.

Poor example. When you put "concert" in the sentence you have to say "the" in reference to the concert. The point is you would say:
"I'm going to see Radiohead tonight"
but
"I'm going to see the Pixies tonight"

/edit x2 The question is whether "the" is part of the name.

But the lowercase is the key -- it's not "I'm going to see The Pixies." It's "I'm going to see the Pixies."

Yes. Although I do see it capitalized a lot. My yahoo music player has them listed under "Pixies, The" and I've seen "The Pixies" many times.

I'm going to see the The Rolling Stones concert.

Yeah, I'm sorry. I was just pointing out that his example didn't make sense. The point is that it should be "the Pixies" not "The Pixies."

In my computer music library the only bands that get "The" in their ID tag is "The Who" and "The Band". Otherwise it would be too confusing /images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Doors come in nice under "D".

Who or Band without "The" in front do nt make sense to me.

Already have "misc" and "various" and "artist" that I always try to retag in music library /images/graemlins/smile.gif.

The problem stems from their official name is just "Pixies", but it is a prural and therefore begs for a preceding "the" in many situations. However, it is technically singular (e.g. "a band"), so whilst the sentance "I am going to see Pixies tonight" is gramatically correct, it sounds wrong. Therefore, I think it is better to say "the Pixies". Furthermore, it should not be capatalised, as it as a vanilla "the", rather than a name "The" (as in "The Fall").

Phew.

Facinating.

It should be "Pixies" all the time...bugger readability.

I'm going to see Pixies tonight (not at a gay bar tho'...)

I love Pixies (Also NAAGB!)

Do you like Pixies' new album?

Etc...

Think: Rammstein, Led Zepplin, Les Thugs, Los Straightjackets, the Bad Brains, AndAnd!And, !!!, & So On.
