View Full Version : Difference between 1/2 and 2/4

Ok, I started playing poker at the 1/2 level about 7 months ago, and now have about 30k-35k hands at 1/2. I lost for the first 10k or so but have averaged about 2bb/100 for the past 25k hands. I tried to make the jump to 2/4 and lost 110 bb's in about 2000 hands. I was running very bad and the 400+ loss had me nervous

My question is...if I can consistently beat the 1/2 game, should I be able to beat the 2/4 game or is it that staggeringly different?

I know Im a decent player, VPIP of 16, PFR of 10, Aggression of right around 3, and I have read SSHE a time or two. I don't review hands or post here though, so i know I have plenty of leaks!

Is .5/1 to 1/2 a larger jump or 1/2 to 2/4?

16 vpip is low, and although people will again answer this question in this thread, there have been countless others with almost identical titles.

you should be able to find them by searching.

Try playing some 1/2 6 max first. You'll learn to open raise more given the right circumstances and it forces you to develop your hand reading and player reading skills. Also, it prepares you in dealing with fairly constant aggression.

In general I find 2/4 to be easier than 1/2.

If you're having trouble finding fish, take Mr. Wookie's suggestion. He posted in another thread to sit down at an empty table, and start playing when others sit down. You'll find a lot of dumb fish flock to these tables for some reason. If you're uncomfortable with shorthanded, don't worry, cause they fill up very fast, and they fill up with very bad players. I did this last night, and I had a couple tables with over 30% VPIPs, and one table was consistently at 45%. It was like playing .25/.50 on Pokerstars, it was awesome.

Does everyone here play short? I prefer to avoid the game, unless a full rign loses players, in which case they are so terrible I will play it.

I played SH for 2 years - got heart burn from stress even though I was making a bundle. Now only full ring.

2/4 is basically the same as 1/2 - same people - just bigger banks.

As for 16% being to tight?? Well - I'm tight at at 18% so it's not that bad. I think your a little to aggressive actually. People tend to think aggression is a good thing but they start to get dumb aggressive. Unless that 3.00 includes preflop numbes I think you are losing money with being to aggressive. HOWEVER - aggression numbers must be matched with PF numbers - a VERY tight player will have a larger Aggression number and it means less.

16% PF and 3.00 AGG is WAY different then 50%PF and 3.00 AGG

To answer your question - YES - if you can beat 1/2 you can beat 2/4 - without a doubt.

But - that's just my views from 100K hands!
