Ask yourself... why should I raise here, is it for value or to win the pot. If the only hand he will call is a hand that beats you, then it is not for value. If he will often call you with an inferior hand, then it is for value. He is NOT going to fold any 8, or any 7.

I should make it clear that given his past play, I felt 80% sure I was ahead when he raised me. I felt about as certain that he would call my raise on the end with any 9 or better and probably reraise any 86 (less sure of that).

seems okay then. but it has to be very read dependent. otherwise i'm just calling.
