So, I just moved in to a new place in DC, and I finally live by myself. Problem is, the whole place is a big white wall. What are some cool ways to decorate walls that are pretty fun and not too expensive? I'm not opposed to posters and the like, but I'd like to do something a little bit different . . .

I don't want anything "dirty" like a whole wall full of naked chick picks, but beyond that I'm pretty much down for anything.

I KNOW the OOT has some hot ideas on this . . .

make everyone that comes in sign your wall, sure to get some interesting "decorations" with that.

I did this with my beater car once, ended up driving around with a couple of naked girls drawn on there...

and a cowboy, which I'm not too sure about.

I'm picking up some Ansel Adams prints for my apartment next week, but that's really style dependant.

I'm very partial to celtic/indian/asian wall tapestries, but thats also style dependant, and far from original.

When I get my own place I'm definitly going to make a wall of swords and knives, but thats friggin spendy.

My ideas suck, just blow up the art sammy1 posted and hang it up.

Paintings. You can find decent sized canvases on eBay for under $200.

And for someone with a U of Maryland avatar, you might be interested in paintings by a turtle. (http://cgi.ebay.com/Modern-Abstract-Art-Painting-by-Nude-Turtle-KOOPA-nr_W0QQitemZ7353527547QQcategoryZ20135QQssPageName ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) Those can be had for around $100, no problem.

My friend is an agreeable guy, and he'll probably do some art on contract if anyone is interested (and if I get a finder's fee /images/graemlins/smile.gif)

I think I've found a new occupation. Next stop, pet store and the art supply store.

That is dope though.

A "Scarface" poster, a "Metallica" poster, and a bunch of mirrors with beer insignias on them. I'm pretty sure that's never been done before.

My first suggeestion would just be to paint the walls. White walls blow.

Nice. So far, so good.

I'm in a rental, however and I'm not sure I want the security deposit to be completely destroyed. Anyone ever just paint, and then repaint when moving out? How much of a pain is that?

Are you certain they care if you paint? Some places don't make you re-paint. Also, my last place I didn't bother repainting and they only charged me $300 off my deposit even though I pained 3 rooms pretty dark colors. $300 for a year of non-white walls was well worth it.

If you go to stores that advertise they have "home decor", you'll find more ideas. And maybe a cute worker or two to help.

Pier One, Hobby Lobby, Bed Bath & Beyond, Garden Ridge Pottery, Wal-Mart are a few I can think of quickly. My wife drags me thru these places and, to keep from going out of my freakin' mind, I look for car or sports-oriented stuff. I usually find it and keep myself entertained.

If it's not too gay for you, my wife watches HGTV a lot. She's always finding an idea or two there. I frequently wind up searching their online info for her. There's another online source, DIY I think. (do-it-yourself)

I don't think trying to have a nice looking place is gay, especially since chicks are impressed by a nice apartment.

What I meant: If the idea of watching a cable channel largely aimed at persons interested in decorating and/or improving their living environment wasn't counter to his idea of masculine, then he might consider HGTV as a source of information.

No slam intended at gays in my first post, nor this. Nor at you.

Koopa's paintings have gone to the states shown in red. Places without Koopa paintings (yet) are shown in gray. Koopa's goal is to have at least one of his paintings hang in all 50 states, and at least one on every continent except Antarctica.
