View Full Version : So, what's the best TV comedy show, ever?

diebitter

Tricky, but I'd say my top 3 are:

1) Married with Children
2) Futurama
3) Blackadder

there are of course hundreds of others, I'm very glad to say.

PS. For those in North America, have you guys heard of Tommy Cooper? or Morecambe and Wise? Just wondered, considering Benny Hill made it there - sorry bout that.

PPS. If this has been done recently, let me know quick.

so am i correct assume neither of you two has mentioned seinfeld yet because it is undisputed as #1?

also, chappelles shop doesnt really count because there is so little material of it. its some of the funniest stuff ever, but a 2 season show cant really hold water in a competition like this. and the season/skits were very short as well, there was about 12 minutes of funny stuff in each show. genius stuff, but it doesnt cut it for a list like this.

10-03-2005, 02:12 AM
1. Seinfeld
2. Family Guy

Chappelle Show is more a skit show, if that qualifies then it's #2.

1 Blackadder
2 Fawltey Towers
3 Pheonix Knights/ The office (cant really split them)

Men Behaving Badley just outside the top 3 and some episodes of Fool and Horses make it in the top ten.

My top American Comedy would have to be the simpsons apart from that most American light entertainment I cant class as comedies, I did like Married with children way back in the day 1989 or so when Kelly was still hot, Christina went downhill rapidly.

While 'Seinfeld' is the answer, 'I Love Lucy' is the template upon which all U.S. sitcoms are based. Desi Arnaz was an unappreciated visionary.

I am completely serious.

I've never seen a single episode of Seinfeld. He comes on, he looks just like Tony Blair to me, so I turn off the TV. I know it sounds dopey, but it's true.

This thread has persuaded me to give it a go again, though. I do think I may be missing out there.

Will and Grace is the weird one. I don't like it, but I find myself watching it cos I think the squeaky-voiced one is hot as hot can be. How FU am I, huh?

There was a old comedy that was pretty good that I dont remember the name of but was him from the Naked Gun films probably in the same role as he was a detective and was the same sort of humour.

For my sense of humor it's South Park. Never liked Seinfeld. I must admit I've seen few of the sitcoms of the last ten years, that genre is pretty played out for me. My all-time favorite of those may be Dick Van Dyke or The Honeymooners.

"... and did those feet,
in ancient times,
walk up-on England's low-er class,
and did their fore-fathers of old,
tell them to get up off their arse?
and did they try,
to pass the blame,
for all of their societies' ills?
and now we're just the same...
....only worse
We've closed the dark satan-ic mills...

Bring me .<>.
Bring me inflation that is low,
Bring me .<>, oh business fold,
but don't bring me your tales .. of .. woe,
I shall not turn,
from my great plan,
no mat-ter how in-sane it seems,
'till we have built....
.....Jerusalem.....
and made it look like
Mil-ton Keynes....

Excuse the <> where I can't remember it all, but again, I hardly saw these more than once each, maybe twice in some cases.

I may have posted this a long time ago in the politics forum.

Anyway, I just remembered that the lyrics were online to an all time classic of theirs, and OOT is probably the best place for them to live.
For those who have never seen the show, this was during the height of apartheid.

I've Never met A Nice South African - sung by Spitting Image

I've travelled this old world of ours from Barnsley to Peru
I've had sunshine in the arctic and a swim in Tinbuktu
I've seen unicorns in Burma and a Yetti in Nepal
And I've danced with ten foot pygmies in a Montezuma hall
I've met the King of China and a working Yorkshire miner
But I've never met a nice South African.

No he's never met a nice South African
And that's not bloody surprising man
'Cause we're a bunch of arrogant b***tards
Who hate black people

I once got served in Woolies aften less than four week's wait
I had lunch with Rowan Atkinson when he paid and wasn't late
I know a public swimming bath where they don't piss in the pool
I know a guy who got a job straight after leaving school
I've met a normal merman and a fairly modest German
But I've never met a nice South African.

No he's never met a nice South African
And that's not bloody surprising man
'Cause we're a bunch of talentless murderers
Who smell like baboons

I've had a close encounter of the twenty-second kind
That's when an alien spaceship disappears up your behind
I got directory enquiries after less than forty rings
I've even heard a decent song by Paul McCartney's Wings
I've seen a flying pig in a quite convincing wig
But I've never met a nice South African.

No he's never met a nice South African
And that's not bloody surprising man
'Cause we're a bunch of ignorant loudmouths
With no sense of humour - ha ha

I've met the Loch Ness monster and he looks like Fred Astaire
At the BBC in London he's the chief commissionaire
I know a place in Glasgow which is rife with daffodillies
I met a man in Katmandu who claimed to have two willies
I've had a nice pot noodle but I've never had a poodle
And I've never met a nice South African.

No he's never met a nice South African
And that's not bloody surprising man
Because we've never met one either
Except for Breyten Breytenbach and he's emigrated to Paris. (farts)

Yes he's quite a nice South African
And he's hardly ever killed anyone
And he's not smelly at all.
That's why they put him prison.

One of my favourite lines ever in a sitcom is from cheers. It's doesn't sound too great typed out, but it cracks me up whenever I remember it.

Sam (taking Diane into his office): Coach, I don't want to be bothered.
Coach: Who does?

Damn all the stuff I loved back then, the Chicken Song was my fave though

Its the time of year
Now that Spring is in the air
When those two wet gits with their girly curly hair
Make another song for moronic holidays
That nauseate-ate-ate
In a million different ways
From the shores of Spain
To the coast of Southern France
No matter where you hide
You just can't escape this dance

Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Buy a jumbo jet
And then bury all your clothes
Paint your left knee green
Then extract your wisdom teeth
Form a string quartet
And pretend your name is Keith

Skin yourself alive
Learn to speak Arapahoe
Climb inside a dog
And behead an eskimo
Eat a Renault Four with salami in your ears
Casserole your gran
Disembowel yourself with spears

The disco is vibrating
The sound is loud and grating
Its truly nauseating
Let's do the dance again

Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Yes you'll hear this song in the holiday discos
And there's no escape in the clubs or in the bars
You would hear this song if you holidayed in Mars

Skin yourself alive
Learn to speak Arapahoe
Climb inside a dog
And behead an eskimo
Now you've heard it once
Your brain will spring a leak
And though you hate this song
You'll be humming it for weeks

Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Buy a jumbo jet
And then bury all your clothes

They still show it on some of the channels

I believe it was "The new statesman" and it has retained it's humour really well I think.

The odd thing back then was that all of these shows actually made politics interesting to many people (I was one of them), rather than the other way around.

I could probably still name most of Thatcher's cabinet if I had a few minutes, but wouldn't be able to name any of Blair's without really deep thought and a lot of time.

The thing that kept the dead donkey and spitting image fresh was that they were recorded the same week as they went out, dont think there are many shows like that now, maybe have I got news for you is the only one I can think of.

Maybe you should watch it again, there may be things you missed when you were just 14.

I enjoy the way the show finds new ways to push the envelope of acceptable taste and satire. I like the fact that people call it "filth." I like the fact that they are not afraid of anything, and willing to make fun of everyone from all points on the political and social spectrum. "The Passion of The Jew," for example, is brilliant, IMO.

I also don't agree with those who say the show has fallen off, I think it's still sharp most of the time.

I see a lot of people telling us that Seinfeld is the best and anyone that doesn't think so is crazy/ssckt. I will say this once: You're Wrong. I don't know if I'm right, but I damn well know you're wrong.

Fawlty towers the Germans episode, that would probably never get commissioned these days.

Paraphrasing

German : Please stop talking about the war
Basil : You started it
German : No I never
Basil : Yes you did, you invaded Poland

WTF, why is this thread so long? If it was "top 5 shows ever" I could see it being 4 pages. This is dumb. If you're not saying Seinfeld, kill yourself.

Good point, well made.

Or not.

For starters, CYE walks all over Seinfeld.

My vote goes for the Simpsons and Seinfeld.

I think the Simpsons has acheived more, but their medium is pretty much wide open, Seinfeld had a much smaller space to work with and did wonders with it.

I Love Lucy
Dick Van Dyke(So funny you could hear Desi laughing in a lot of episodes)
Cheers, which I even dont give enough respect to
Seinfeld, which is the best and funniest show ever IMO
Simpsons
South Park
Curb Your Enthusiasm
and Arrested Development is heading into history along the same lines

I'd like to say I Love Lucy since I know how influential it's been, but I've only seen a few episodes.

I love Curb, seems like most people I know cant stand it.

I wish I could get into Arrested Development, everyone I know with the exact same taste in humor as me hails it as the next greatest thing, but I don't get into it. Only seen the first season though.

A couple years back TV Guide put together a comprehensive list of the top 100. It hat some good reasoning and stats to back it up. It said Seinfeild. I agree.

Seinfeld

I'd be surprised and ashamed if that was in the top 100 for British people.

Blackadder and Red Drawf for me, probably South Park is funniest NA comedy.

Mack

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, I'm British and I feel you're missing out on one of the top 10 comedies of all time. At first glance it seems to be yet another annoying American sitcom, but give it a go and you'll rapidly discover it's sooooo much more than that.

Apparently this thread was started at the wrong time of day, because Europe has just run amuck with their crazy ideas.

You're thinking of Fraiser, which is bother underrated and overrated but mostly very avg.

It's either Seinfeld or the earlier seasons of The Simpsons for me.

Couldn't be, no one's ever heard of "Frasier." He must mean "The Tortellis."

*edit: Night Court wasn't a spinoff of Cheers, but Harry Anderson (Judge Harry T. Stone) had a recurring role on Cheers as a con man named Harry the Hat.

Wasn't Night Court a spinoff of something, or was there a Spinoff of Night Court?

I remember loving NC when I was younger, but I hesitate to watch now because I'm really afraid it will suck hard.

Yep was getting confused with Frasier, have never seen any Seinfeld then another one for my queue.

No love for the Cosby show or different strokes in this thread, both shows I watched as a kid or Happy Days god the amount of reruns we get of that.

B Dids

I did, that's why I asked...

Cosby Show is OK, ground breaking because it was a show that featured a black cast that white people actually watched, but beyond just Bill Cosby being generally funny wasn't that great.

Sorry. Night Court wasn't a spinoff of anything. Just a vehicle for Harry Anderson, who kind of got started on TV in Cheers, but as a different character.

Its interesting noone mentioned Friends neither which has probably been the biggest hit in the UK of recent US comedies, mainly with woman though, I think the first few series were ok but it went downhill quickly.

Its interesting that we share a lot of culture with the US films, music etc but comedy is one where there seems to be a big gap. British comedy tends to be written by one or two writers as I understand it most US sit coms have a pool writers and most US series go on for longer each season is generally much longer than anthing in the UK, the key thing about most classic brit comedy is that there were only 6-10 episodes per series.

Forgot about South Park.

There was a old comedy that was pretty good that I dont remember the name of but was him from the Naked Gun films probably in the same role as he was a detective and was the same sort of humour.

[/ QUOTE ]

The show you're thinking of was "Police Squad". It was very good. It was canceled after 5 or 6 episodes. It had the same writers, etc. as the Naked Gun movies (also the "Airplane" movies) and same characters. Leslie Nielsen stared in both the series and the movies.
