I am in the mood for jazz, but all I have is My Favorite Things by Coltrane, which I love. So please suggest some albums along the same lines.

Those links are 9GB worth of Coltrane.

Great stuff, there isn't much chaff in there.

If you like MFT because it's off beat from regular (4/4) jazz, look up Dave Brubeck's Take Five. If you want some just spectacular jazz that's been knocking my socks of lately, I'd recommend:

Louis Armstrong - The Complete Hot Fives and Hot Sevens Collection
Duke Ellington - Masterpieces 1926-1949
Gene Harris - The Best of the Concord Years
Various Aritists - For Dancers Only!

Maynard Ferguson - The essence of maynard ferguson
Wes Montgomery - Incredible Jazz Guitar
Barney Kessel - It's a Blue World
Charles Mingus - Blues and Roots
Charlie Parker - Jazz 'Round Midnight
Chops - Chops II [I know the band leader who is awesome and the group is very good - good luck finding it though]
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong did some recording together, so find whatever album it is that they cut

The others give good advice.

I haven't seen Coltrane's A Love Supreme mentioned though which if you dig MFT I think you'll love.

If you like that coltrne lbum, check out some dave Brubeck, specifically, 'time out'... also, as another poster mentioned, try coltrane's 'a love supreme'

Best of Blue Note Vol. I (one of my all time favorite LP's, I think the CD is import only but well worth finding)

George Benson - Breezin'

Ronnie Laws - Pressure Sensitive

Weather Report - Heavy Weather

i think before he steps off into those waters, he should get familiar with some more stuff in the vein of mft and other hard bop/early 60s jazz just so he has some more background. A love Supreme can be very confusing to someone who isn't completely familiar with what trane is doing there

he wants to listen to good jazz, not crap wannabe rock jazz, plus if you're gonna give him good fusion recomendations, none of these fit that bill either.

OP, if you're gonna check out George Bensen, check out Cookbook

If you want something very accessible yet great, Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock. You'll get the greatest technical trumpeter of the last 60 years at his absolute peak.

Matador by Grant Green has a great version of My Favorite Things, done by Green, a guitarist, with Tyner and Jones from Coltrane's band. Also try:

Tom Cat by Lee Morgan
Oblique by Bobby Hutcherson
Judgement by Andrew Hill
Inner Urge by Joe Henderson
The Real McCoy by McCoy Tyner

Herbie Hancock: Headhunter

And the poster than suggested Amon Tobin's Bricolage, he meant to say the album Permutation, but they are both amazing.

Jazz is in there for sure, hard to call it jazz though. You won't be disappointed.

Other crap rock/wannabe/fusion/suck jazz I like but you probably shouldn't bother with:

Jeff Beck - Wired

Grover Washington Jr. - Winelight

No Keith Jarrett on this list?

I'd suggest

At The Blue Note - 6 discs, shorter standards, accessible

or

Sun Bear Concerts - 6 discs, longer improvs, reasonably accessible

good call. THe complete set of his american quartet is awesome. I don't know if there is a complete set of his european quartet, but all of the albums of that group are readily available on ecm. also, any of Jarrett's standards trio is top notch

Here are a couple essentials I haven't seen mentioned yet:

The Thelonius Monk Quartet: Monk's Dream
John Coltrane: Giant Steps
