DVD burning software

I just got a new computer and have yet to try burning a DVD. I am sure copying one can't be hard, but what if I want to burn an avi or divx file to disc, what is the best program to use and will it be compatible with other DVD players? Also, what if I have a movie saved as two files? Is there away to burn them as one continuous selection?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
