I'm curious about something. $40-80 hold'em game. Let's say you have J-10s on the button. First position limps and two more players call and you limp as well. Does this hand throw a profit?

#2. Same hand only this time first positon raises and two players call as do you. Does this hand throw a profit?

My contention is that the first hand breaks about even (maybe a small loss) and the second hand shows a loss. I have no way to confirm, it is just my gut instinct.

Can anyone answer definitively?

This is a big it depends. Your post-flop ability, your opponents ability, how loose the blinds are, and other things are going to certainly have an impact on the profitability of a hand like JTs.

I certainly would tend to agree with you about it being +EV in the first case and probably -EV in the second though, although I certainly don't have the data to back it up.

What does +EV and -EV stand for?

Positive expected value, and negative expected value.
