2004 Altima, 4-cylinder, 24k miles - $15k
2005 Infiniti G35, 6-cylinder, 16k miles - $26k

Keep in mind the user has no idea what to do with the extra performance in the G35.

im a tad bit snobbish and concerned with brand names. i definetly take the upper line of cars. can't beat 260HP.

Car's not for me.

Gas prices are a small concern. Total cost for the car is a larger concern. The G35 won't at all put this purchaser in the poorhouse, but it will be a noticable change in general lifestyle habits. The Altima will be a non-event. It is worth noting that the purchaser definitely prefers the looks and styling of the G35. I'm hard pressed to disagree on that point.

G-35, eveyone loves it, it will be much more fun to drive, even if you don't know anything about cars. plus, this is the us, we drive everywhere, and spending that much of you time in your car it is worth the investment to get something you will like and be proud of.

and yet they only have these 2 options. There has to be a more appropriate car than one that is too much power, or one that is visually underwhelming.

G35 is loaded standard (i think) with a lot of very good standard features for luxury, performace (engine, suspension, braking), and safety. it also looks pretty good and has a good name value. it definetly pick that, but clearly you shouldn't really take advice on buyin a car from random people on the internet too seriously. obviously, the final decision is yours and should be mostly all made by you

The purchaser also had a 2001 Lexus ES300 (35k miles) for $20,500 that missed the final cut, as well as a 2003 Acura TL-S (36k miles) for $23,000 that missed the cut. It's come down to an "all or nothing" point - super economical (that the purchaser does still like) or the top choice (also the most expensive).

The Altima.

I love my Altima. I don't care if its not a cool car---if the purchaser will notice the 11k, and they aren't planning to race, than sacrificing "looks" for 11k is a reasonable choice.

That said, I'm sure other people can find better cars for the money, but for the choices, I vote Altima.

Anecdotal evidence: my brothers last Altima, 290k miles, original engine.

Damn, I realized I am undoubtedly on your Ignore list, so my for-once reasonable advice will go unheeded.

I hope they blame you for this oversight when they get the G35, and would have ultimately prefered the Altima.

Aww, that car sounds like it would've been the winner.

I'd probably go for the Altima in this situation just because they last forever, and are nice cars. Sure, it's not the G35, but I think it's plenty good in this situation.

InchoateHand

Honestly? Probably not.

And I still say the Altima. The novelty of a really cool car wears off pretty fast, and unless the money doesn't mattter, I'm sure it can be better spent elsewhere.

Finance the difference on the cost of the Infinity.

I would certainly prefer the G35, but given the circumstance, I think I'd recommend the Altima. If she's got no idea or inkling how to use the extra performance of the Infinity, that tips the scale in favor of the Nissan.

Of course, if you're going to wind up driving the car a lot, that might change things a bit.

toypta corolla. gets 40 mpg hiway. only 16,000 bucks brand new. dont have to insure for damage as its cheap. the best girls love it as they know you are conservative and will be a good candidate for the future. the skanky ones you dont care about.

I just got an 05 Altima (slight redesign from 04 will affect resale) from Hertz with 25K on it for $14,900. They have the same deal you have on the Infiniti.

I work in the industry, so if you've got questions, I may be able to help.

the wife's driving the corolla these days. i bought it for 11K cash 6 years and 135K miles ago. 165K miles and no major repairs yet. still gets 28mpg city. it has been hit three times. first two were fender-benders. we cashed checks for $300 and $420 and left the bumper bent. then last year a guy took a right turn into it. busted the headlight and rippled the hood and front left corner. they gave us replacement value, $3,150. we cashed that check, spent $220 on repairs for inspection, and she's still driving it. another three wrecks and we're freerolling.

There's really not an 11K difference in price because when they resell the car the G35 will undoubtedly sell for more than the Altima at that point in time.

Here's my choice - I only see people in their 50's driving Altimas.

Close vote.

A few days later, things have changed. Still on the list is the G35. Gone is the Altima. New is a $20k 2005 V6 Accord LX with 10k miles on it and a brand new 2005 Acura TSX for 27k.
