One of the common nuts is not like the others. Part of the plant contains high quantities of the chemicals that make poison ivy so allergenic. Which nut is it, and why?

Choose from the following nuts:

Almond
Brazil nut
Cashew
Filbert
Hazelnut
Peanut
Pecan
Walnut

A peanut is not a nut.

Edit: It's actually a legume, just to make my answer complete.

Edit2: Uh I didn't read the question. I thought this was "one of these things is not like the other." My answer would have been cashew too, as I am badly alergic to poison ivy, ate cashews once, and got really sick, and was told this is why.

So I still go with peanut.

Cashew is correct but the reasoning is not. No special knowledge is required get the answer. Any child who is familiar with all of them can give the correct reason.

I used to be able to name every nut that there was. And it used to drive my mother crazy, because she used to say, "Harlan Pepper, if you don't stop naming nuts," and the joke was that we lived in Pine Nut, and I think that's what put it in my mind at that point. So she would hear me in the other room, and she'd just start yelling. I'd say, "Peanut. Hazelnut. Cashew nut. Macadamia nut." That was the one that would send her into going crazy. She'd say, "Would you stop naming nuts!" And Hubert used to be able to make the sound, he couldn't talk, but he'd go "rrrawr rrawr" and that sounded like Macadamia nut. Pine nut, which is a nut, but it's also the name of a town. Pistachio nut. Red pistachio nut. Natural, all natural white pistachio nut.

Everyone knows its Cashew nut. Doesn't it grow on the end of the fruit or something, does that have something to do with the 'why' part?

Almonds are totally different.

People who are allergic to "tree nuts" ie (walnut, hazelnut, etc) and those who are allergic to Peanuts can often (but not always) eat almonds which although aften classified as a "tree nut" may truly be a "pit".

Although cashews are the one that are similar to poison ivy.

But I contend the one most unlike the others in the list is almond. I incidentally am allergic to "tree nuts" and to peanuts but can eat almonds fine.

Poison Ivy is part of the cashew family. Urushiol is the rash-causing oil in the ivy and in the cashew nut shell.

The only distinguishing characteristic that I estimate a child would recognize is the fact that a cashew is curved. How in the world this could have anything to do with poison ivy, I do not know.

Somobody got it. The answer is cashew because it is the only nut you have not seen in the shell. They must be shelled mechanically to avoid getting a poison ivy-type rash.
