I have a friend who is going to start 8-tabling 5/10 full ring. Because of his computer, he won't be able to run Gametime while he is playing. We had this discussion, and I was wondering, if you played straight ABC poker without knowing ANYTHING about your opponents (if they are LAG/TAG, their VPIP/PFR numbers, etc), and you just played solely on the cards and the pot, could you be a winning player at 5/10? 6 max? I consider "winning" to be at least 1BB/100.

Yeah, certainly. But why wouldn't you use it?
There are other alternatives to consider like as pokerace that may not chew through as many cpu cycles.

Tell him to 4 table for a while and use that extra money to buy a computer that can handle Gametime
I have not played 5/10 but I have read here that that is the first limit where you cannot get by just by playing ABC poker.

This is what I have heard as well, so I was hoping someone with more experience in the higher limits could comment. This is more for discussion because personally, I find myself sometimes forgetting who was just at my table (when you play 8), and which player is the LAG/TAG. GT helps a lot, but is it necessary?

Yes, but its harder.
I am sure it is doable, but no matter how good he is, learning to use GT and PT well will ad very significantly to his winrate.
I personally would rather start with a 200BB bankroll and a new computer than with 300BB bankroll without having the benefits of GT. If he has the bankroll to play 5/10, he should by a new computer!
On the other hand - I would much rather meet him on the 5/10 tables without it :-)

You must learn how to hand read and use all those neat lines and in the right situation.
I've 4-table 5/10 over a few 10k hands at some tight ass tables (Tiger Action Gaming). The only way I walked away with a decent win rate was because I played with the same 35-40 Players everytimes and learned how to attack their weaknesses.

HUD's are relatively recent developments in online poker. Many players won a lot of money without HUDS. I know some of you will claim that now that HUDs are out, everyone has one and you need one to keep up. I flatly rejectly this for obvious reasons.
