people at the blackjack tables beleive the dumbest things. (for example if you take a hit on a card you normally should stay on they say it screws up the deck - and they honestly beleive it - as if the game was designed for them to win anyway). maybe this is where david's hatred of keno players comes from.
i know some people just play for fun but never met dumber people than at the blackjack tables in Atlantic City. (Incidentally i know im dumb for playing but mostly killing just killing time after playing poker.)

It's not just casino goers, but rather the majority of the populous. I would wager that over 90% of all people would buy into various blackjack fallacies. The nature of blackjack simply has a way of pointing out how stupid people really are. It's really sad, especially when you're sitting at a table with good friends or family and you see that they fall victim to the very same illogic. And try explaining to someone the fact that one person making a bad move doesn't inherently screw anything up for anyone else.

On another note, I would wager that the percentage of the population that believes in common blackjack fallacies directly correlates to the religious percentage of the population. It's equally difficult to explain to someone that "faith" isn't very good reasoning.

Have to agree. As a semi-professional blackjack player, I spend a lot of time hearing that garbage. If I had a nickle for everytime someone talked about "screwing up the deck" etc...I'd be rich.

They're not stupid at all, at least not the old ladies that bring in $20 and spend a day with their friends at the nickel slots. A day's worth of entertainment for $20 - and they might actually make some money and have some more fun. It's better than sitting around at home watching the jewelry channel. And MUCH cheaper, too. Don't get me started on my grandma's QVC bill.

Think that's tough? Try explaining to someone that faith is an entirely different (and no less valid) epistemology from reason.

In other words, if you're trying to convince someone that faith "isn't very good reasoning," then you're the one who's missed the point.

I don't know what I was doing there, looking for argument? So ok, I concede. Good point, faith is indeed an entirely different epistemology from reason. So neither shall I argue that it's any less valid, but I will still assert the rest of my argument. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
