View Full Version : Schumaker

I don't know if this question belongs in here, but I link it to etymology which is a science. So...and I don't want to put it in OOT b/c it doesn't suit that crowd.

Anyway I'm watching the Astros-Cardinals game last night and a pinch runner comes in for the Cardinals named Schumaker. I found this strange.

I've always seen this name, which means "Maker of Shoes" either spelled Schumacher (pronounced Shoe-mocker), or Shoemaker. I'm assuming Schumacher is the German form of the name, while Shoemaker is English.

I'm very confused as to how the first portion of his name was German, yet the "K" in the last portion signifies remnants of the English spelling...

For what it's worth, yes, I'm a big nerd who ponders stupid stuff and probably won't get responses, but can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance,

K Steel
