My girlfriend and I are looking for a good 2 player card game (other than p*ker) to learn together. Any suggestions for something that isn't too tough to learn, but has a decent amount of strategy to it?

2 player spades.

Play is exactly like spades except instead of dealing out four hands the deck is placed face down in the middle of the table and the two players alternate picking cards. The first player looks at the top card. If he/she wants it, he/she puts it in his hand and then discards the new top card on the deck without looking at it. If he/she does not want it, he/she must take the new top card into his/her hand. Then the next player goes. Alternate until all cards are dealt. Each player now has a hand of 13 cards. The first player to pick now bids as in spades (although with no partner). The second player then bids. The first player leads the opening trick. Play then commences as in spades.

Very fun game. There are several other variations as well.

I have no idea how to spell the name or search for the rules, but there's a game that sounds like this "PUH-soy" and I think it's filipino or from another Asian culture and it uses poker hands and it rules.

If you two are really secure in your relationship, Spite and Malice is a good one--two player solitaire. Hugely frustrating.

cribbage-- it has enough luck in it so that a good player doesn't beat a bad player all of the time, but it has some skill to it. it is also a fairly simple game to play that does not require a lot of concentration and only takes about 10 minutes to play a game.

Gin. You can even needle in Gin. "Come on baby, give me the card I need, you can do it!" "Oh you'd have to do something really special to get me to give you this card, I'm putting that one over here" (Move card around in your hand)

Gin is a great game.

this game (aka big two, or big deuce) does rule, though it's more fun with 3 or 4 players.

Thanks everyone. We started playing Gin the other night, and had a good time. We'll try some more of the listed games soon.
