View Full Version : FILM: Movies that have made you tear up

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I did a search and couldn't find anything. I'm having this discussion with a friend and I'm having a hard time remembering movies that have made me tear up.

The only one I can remember is Forrest Gump when Bubba dies, and when he's standing over Jenny's grave and telling her how smart their son is.

I think it's pretty lame that this is the movie that brought me to tears.

What movies made you tear up? I'd say cry, but I doubt anyone in here has been reduced to bawling over a movie. If you have, let's hear about that too.

Titanic, when the old people cuddle up on the bed as the ship is going down.

The Notebook, when they exchange "I love you"s and go to sleep for the last time.

I, apparently, have a soft spot when it comes to old people. The one-two punch of life-long love and facing my own mortality is too much for me.

Oh, English Patient was another. Love meets death again.

I didn't mean to imply any actual connection between the two (i don't even know what studio made the movie), just that the movie seemed really moralistic to me, with he same sort of message. For whatever reasons sports movies tend to get me...

Rudy - absolutely, every single time he runs onto the field and the crowd roars...I'm wiping my eyes.

Friday Night Lights - when Boobie Miles leaves the locker room for the last time, climbs in the car with his uncle and breaks down...zero-to-crying in 3.8 seconds

Radio - my cousin is mentally retarded, so that one's a no-brainer

I dunno...the typical movies that make people cry (Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Titanic, etc.) don't have much effect on me, but sports movies kill me.

Even Hoosiers - when Hackman says "I love you guys"

Also anything to do with Lost's John Locke (not sports, but he's like a composite of my dad and my pseudo father-in-law) gets me pretty good.

Maybe I cry too much...haha.

Band of Brothers - many times but particularly at the end when they are playing baseball and Winters narrates about what happened to each of them after the war.

Saving Pvt. Ryan - when the preacher comes to deliver the news to Ryan's mom.

Bridges of Madison County - at the end when Streep's character is just about to walk out of the truck and then doesn't.

I'm sure there are others, but these three immediately come to mind.

The end of Band of Brothers where we see the real life people and put names to faces.

Field of Dreams

And at the end of Blow - where he tape records his final message to his dad:

"Hello Dad. You know I remember a lifetime ago, when I was about 3 1/2 feet tall, weighing all of 60 pounds, but every inch your son. I remember those Saturday mornings going to work with my dad, we'd climb into that big green truck. I thought that truck... was the biggest truck in the universe pop. I remember how important the job we did was, how if it wasn't for us, people would freeze to death. I thought you were the strongest man in the world. And remember those home videos when mom would dress up like Loretta Young, barbeques and football games, ice cream, playing with the Tuna. And when I left for California only to come home with the FBI chasing me, and that FBI agent Trout had to kneel down to put my boots on and you said, "That's where you belong you son of a bitch, puttin on Georgie's boots." That was a good one pop, you remember that? And remember that time when you told me that money wasn't real? Well old man, I'm 42 years old, and I finally realize what you were trying to tell me, so many years ago. I finally understand. Your the best, pop, just wish I could have done more for you, wish we had more time. Anyway, may the wind always be at your back, and the sun always upon your face, and may the wings of destiny carry you aloft to dance with the stars. I love you Dad. Love George."

For me I used to cry everytime the show Lassie ended although I was very little at the time.

In teenage years Breakfast Club and Dead Poets Society.

In more recent times, the End of Band of Brothers (ok not a film) when they showed you who was who and had the old men talking about themselves and their experiences and also a film about the Hillsbourgh disaster which is soccer related so wont be understood across the pond.

The ending of Big Fish.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Two parts for some reason really get to me: When Joel says how much he loved Huckleberry Hound when he was a kid, and when Mary finds out about everything.

transformers: the movie

I think the clear cartoon winner is Grave of the Fireflies. Ninja Scroll is even sadder than Transformers. Macross Plus is another good one, which has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.

big fish (have a close relationship with my dad)

I told my mom to watch it. I think she cried for 24 hours. She had the fortune to hold each of her parents' hands as they died about 5 years apart.

Terrific film. My dad wouldn't be able to handle it. He lost his father far more tragically at a much much younger age.

Believe it or not, the very end of The Godfather III, when Michael's daughter gets shot at the opera, and he is so totally overcome with immediate grief that even Connie cannot believe how badly he is suffering.

Another is when Debra Winger dies in Terms of Endearment. Shirley MacLaine really hit it on the head in that scene.

And when Tom Cruise's character confronts his father on his deathbed in Magnolia. Wow. And people say he can't act.

How about the entire end of House of Sand and Fog? Talk about suffering. Good lord.

How about when David Merrick removes his pillow and lays his head down to die in the Elephant Man, with Barber's Adagio for Strings playing on the soundtrack? You'd have to be made out of titanium not to be affected by that scene.

How about when Andy Dufresne looks up and sees his friend Red walking toward him on the beach? Nice.

Or the scene where The Duke makes the women eat their own feces in Salo.

OK, that last one was for entirely different reasons.

Graveyard of the Fireflies is so unbearably sad it's almost impossible to watch.

Especially when you see the supplemental material on the DVD or otherwise find out it came from a autobiographical book. It must have been agony to write it and live with it. I swear, I started choking up just thinking about it now.

That movie and My Life as a Dog rip me up every time, and for that reason I can't watch them too often even though they're astonishingly good and have so many great things in them besides tragedy.

He just usually doesn't choose to. He was also gut wrenchingly good in Born on the Fourth of July.

Excellent one! That was also incredibly sad. The commentary on that one was very good, too. I wasn't sure if the mother knew at the end or not, but after listening to Kingsley, I watched it again and it was even more heartbreaking at the end.

Many chances for major tears in that movie. Extraordinarily moving. Supremely good stuff.

I stood up and cheered when Sofia Coppola took it in the gut. Had I not been fully prepared by friends & reviews for it to suck, Godfather III would have probably been the most disappointing film experience of my life. Sofia Coppola as Connie has got to be one of the worst casting decisions of all time. My disbelief was completely un-suspended at this point. Eat lead, sugar!

I agree wholeheartedly.

My point, though, was that Michael is absolutely destroyed, and Pacino was very good in the scene.

I love the way she delivers the line, "Dad" after she gets shot. It's absolutely abysmal.

I am ashamed to admit that this was true for me too.

My gf at the time started bawling and that affected me. So I just looked away from her so she wouldn't see. When I later admitted to getting teary, she played hers off as being because we were gonna be separated for three weeks. Sweet, she makes me look like a pussy.

The end of Band of Brothers gets me everytime. Specifically, the part where the real life Winters quotes Sgt. Mike Ranney of the 101st: "In thinking back on the days of Easy Company, I'm treasuring my remark to a grandson who asked, 'Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?' No, I answered, but I served in a company of heroes."
Cue the waterworks.

One nobody mentioned: Reds, when the guy makes it back to his wife at the end - whew.

This kind of thing is all about hitting you at the right time in the right "mood" though. Same movie might make me choke up one day, and might make me laugh and roll my eyes a different day.

I remember being really moved by Reds, but I haven't seen it since it came out, and now barely remember it. Or I should say, I only remember that I and everyone else loved it, and it had Warren Beatty in it, and he directed it. I should rent it and see it again.
