View Full Version : Greatest War Movie of All Time - Round Three

Time for round three. The notable upset in round was Glory losing to Black Hawk Down. I don't think River Kwai has a chance to knock off Black Hawk Down but maybe FMJ can, we'll see. On to round three, some tough tough matchups, particularly in group 1.

Edit - Once again the poll choices are all out of order, sorry about that.

How the hell is Three Kings still in there? How could Kwai NOT beat BHD this round? Kwai is one of the best movies ever made.

Group 3 was the only one I had to pause over. Tough call between 'All Quiet...' and 'Platoon'

How could ANY match-up be that favorable?

Three Kings is an amazing movie, very masterfully done. Reputed film critic Roger Ebert put it as #3 of 1999.

I've wondered why people who do these bracket poll thingies put the seedings into the poll. I would think it makes people who shouldn't have an opinion on that particular one just pick the higher seeded option.

In round one Three Kings got matched up with the 1941 Gary Cooper movie Sgt. York, which explains why it won out that matchup. In round two it faced The Boys in Company C, another somewhat obscure movie.

The reason I put the seedings in there was to emulate the March Madness brackets. Sure, people's votes may be skewed by having this information, but people are pretty retarded anyway when it comes to these polls, voting on movies they've never seen and so forth.

It's a tough matchup for sure. But personally, I voted Deerhunter here, with a clear conscience.

I'm favouring The Longest Day or Das Boot because i like rooting for underdogs.

I thought Apocalypse Now vs The Deerhunter would be closer than it is at the mo.

Are you kidding me? Sgt. York is a classic! One of my favorite movies. And the Boys of Co. C is an awesome movie as well! It's not that obscure either. I've probably seen it 10 times.

Two tuff choices for me:

Bridge vs BHD (I voted Bridge)

and

Saving Pvt. Ryan vs Patton (I voted SPR)

My point was the average OOTer has had more exposure to movies made in 1999 than movies made in 1941. You are the one obvious exception, being that you probably went to see Sgt. York on opening night.

Sigh, looks like Stalag 17 isn't going to get the votes to make it to round 4. I thought The Great Escape was a fantastic movie, but Stalag 17 is better IMO.

McQueen jumping the fence on the Nazi bike puts it over the top of Stalag 17.

Probably top 5 action movie moment of all-time.

Tough choice, but a correct one. Would you think the same if you saw the film without knowing Stone was the director?

My original response had AQWF as my #5, but Platoon #2.
AQWF was a great book though.

I was harsh on Longest Day, as well. Did you know that the bag piper who follows Lord Lovat (Peter Lawford) through the battles is played by the real bag piper who accompanied in battle the real Lord Lovat and his British commandos everywhere after D-Day? Yep.

Well, other than Paths of Glory losing there aren't really any surprises this time around. I was pretty certain Platoon would win this round, and I'm happily surprised that Bridge on the River Kwai is running strong against Black Hawk Down.

Just watched "Come and See" (don't remember the Russian name). That movie was definately worthy of making it to this round at least.

I know we are into the 3rd round here, but I still feel ripped off that Bat 21 was not even on the list? This movie was better than all of the 10 seeds or lower IMO.

I don't think it was mentioned in the nominations thread.
