he goes to school at NYU and is a film student, he needs like 5 grand to make a film, of which he's only raised like 2, he's looking to borrow the other 3, any ideas on how to go about it?

he probably has pretty decent credit, but does mostly freelance film stuff for money, so i don't know what he'd put on a loan app. He makes decent money and would be able to pay back the loan eventually but obviously most banks don't go on just your word.

thoughts?

My brother and his friends just did this.

They basically sold "shares" of the movie. They did an article in the local paper, and advertised it as buying a piece of the film, bla bla bla. If they movie gets picked up for X dollars by some big company, then that X will be split equally amongst the share holders. You can email them for more info, the website for the movie is Here (http://www.dorotytours.com) and it should have some contact info somewhere.

He should borrow the 3 grand from a friend, such as yourself. I suggest he name his movie, The Blair Witch Project. I have a feeling it will do quite well.

there is no investing in this movie, as it's gonna be like 15 minutes long and go nowhere, it's part of his film school ish, so he'll have a reel for later, he's gonna pay for the whole thing, just looking for a way to get money for now that he can pay back later.

edit: i offered to lend him the money as a last resort, but i don't really want him in debt to me, and he certainly doesn't want to be in debt to me.

He should sell 60% shares of the movie for $3000 and give 60% of the profit to all of the shareholders. Then he should make a musical about Hitler that won't make any money and keep all the money for himself.

The way I see it, you have two choices. I'd go for craps because I'm running bad at Roulette right now.

He can sleep with 30 fat chicks for $100 each. Or 3 *really* fat chicks for $1000 each.

What? Fat chicks need love too...but they gotta pay.

boiled even further, how does one go about getting a loan for a small amount of money, if working but not at a regular job.

He should get a job at Kim's video, like every other deadbeat asswipe NYU film student who thinks they're too good to work a real job for their money.

friend in question is probably the hardest working person i've ever met, certainly a lot harder working then i am he just has a temporary need for cash that he'll be willing and capable to pay back later, it's essentially a student loan

Have him talk to your finance dept at the school, they have all sorts of crazy [censored] he could look into.

Get a credit card.

And then have rotating credit card debt to avoid the interest payments if he doesn't pay it off in the 0APR sign up period.

if he goes to NYU, he has access to all the equipment he needs - I know,I also went to NYU Film School.

2 grand is plenty to make a student film. If he needs, he's either drastically under-budgeted and should re-think his project on the budget he CAN afford, or he's an idiot who will never get out of film school sucessfully.

Either way, giving him more money only exacerbates the problem.

it's not equipment it's film and processing, which is ridiculously expensive.

i appreciate the sentiment, i doubt my poker playing ass will convince my friend to change his "art". I'm just trying to help him figure out the financial aspect.

i've madefeature films for less than $60,000 and 2-hour adult films for less than $20,000.

It's criminal for him to spend 5 grand on a student film.

If it's the stock and processiong costs, I've got one word for him:

video.

you said you're NYU, it's a color synch class and video is not an option, supposed to be about 15 minutes or so i'm not sure if it's 16 or 35 (though i'm guessing it's 16) and he's pretty anal, all in all, i don't have any say in any film related issues, i'm just trying to help him figure out the money side.

Frankly he's going to spend more then he needs to and that's fine, cause he's the type of guy that'll get it payed back right quick, but he still needs it, and needs it within a month or two.

there's no way a 15-minute student film should cost that much. he needs to re-think his budget.
