Let me save all the typing with a picture...

http://christickner.com/badweek.gif

My week is udnerlined in black. Anyone who has been through something like this (alot of you), can you please give me some encouragment that this indeed will turn around? I feel like I am playing the same as I was for the first 500.

Just use it as an opportunity to work on your game.

I had a pretty bad downswing last month leaving me with a bankroll of like $600, also partly due to poor play I must admit. So yeah I dropped down from $33 to $22 and churned my way back up. Learnt heaps from the whole experience, even though it was bad at the time.

Then last week I had 76% ROI for a period of 100 games, so I guess I've felt both sides of variance now.

I can't say for certain that you will turn around. But yeah I did. Also I'm surprised you've felt like your play has remained the same for the whole time. Surely after 600 games you would be better?

Crappest month I've had since I graduated from the microlimits. But nothing compared to many posters at 2+2 I imagine, and all losing players /images/graemlins/smirk.gif, at least I ended on a high.

Thanks for the post.

No actually I do not think I have gotten much better. I had thought I was getting better until I started this downswing. Perhaps I am now playing slightly worse but who knows?

Just sucks to never win coinflips, never win when dominating, rarely win when 40/60. I can actually predict the cards that are going to ruin me before I even see them. QQ vs 88? I dont stand a chance.

Yeah I guess it's like that. Just try to review HHs, don't worry so much about results as making good decisions, keep posting problem hands on 2+2 and start making some money back.

Predicting you will lose with QQ vs 88 is silly and should be left to the gamblers at the casino who think the house edge (what house edge?) doesn't matter cuz they can beat it anyway. This sort of thinking will hurt your play, try evaluate everything based on the expected value rather than short term results, even though it is quite unnatural for us humans.

Ok, here's the deal:

If looking at a very normal cumulative profit curve makes you feel sad, then you don't understand SNGs.

It would be like me posting a thread about how upset I get when it rains in Vegas because it's supposed to be sunny here most of the time. It is sunny here most of the time, and sometimes it rains. There's absolutely no sense in letting the rain bother me.

Anybody who has played a few thousand SNGs or more could show you a pictograph of their short term results that would make you throw up in your mouth.

Listen to bones, he knows what he's talking about.

Irie,
Great post as usual. I only have one question . . .
<<<Listen to bones, he knows what he's talking about.>>>
I went back to double-check, but have yet to figure out what bones is saying. Not that there is anything wrong with it, but all he did was his best Yugo impersonation, by posting a nice looking picture of a lady. So what exactly is the message here Irie? Please explain:)

I would like to see some of these, to help me udnerstand a bit more clearly. This was my first 50 buyin downswing, and it sucks, but meh.

P.S. Nice post.

That is like telling somebody that you have diarrhea, and then when they tell you they had bad diarrhea once, you ask them to show you pictures of it.

It's impolite, and nobody likes looking at pictures of their own diarrhea.

Just know that every winner goes through it. If you are a marginal winner, you will go through it a lot.

I am having a bad week that would put some serious perspective onto your graph. But it's all personal and non-poker related and I have some very good friends on this forum who are helping me out.

The thing that you need to understand with your graph is that you are up from zero. Pretty impressive and that's what you need to focus on. I used to post a picture of my worst downswing, but I can't find it. But if you continue playing you are probably going to have many more episodes just like this one so you will get to the point where you look at a downswing or break-even streak like this one and it will reassure you that you have gone through these, you have recovered from these, and you continue to show a profit in spite of them.

i looked at the part where it said "0 games played" and it said "0 dollars profit" and then i looked at the part where it said "more games played" and it said "more than 0 dollars profit" and then i stopped caring about your whining crap.

My last 3 weeks are losing over 500 SnGs. I actually manage to sleep at night and not start threads about it... If you really need to see a graph PM me and I'll send it to you.

I went on my second biggest down swing since may, I got a bad flu and desided it is a good time to play = wrong.

I used to play the 55+5 turbos on stars, i went from having 146 buy ins down to 103 buy ins, things starting to get better, all in a spam of 1 week.

This was "summer 2005", really just June and July because i took all of August off, as well as early September.
Avg BI about $30, mostly 22s and some 55s.

OK. from #550 to #1200, didnt make a dime, and was down x(?) buyins at some point. From 800-825, by butt really hurt /images/graemlins/blush.gif But it all comes out in the wash, as the graph seems to be climbing, unlikely to ever hit $zero.

I'm pretty sure i felt like sh.t in those bad patches, and was king of the world in heaters(#150 to 550, #900-925, and #1550 to present).

Just remember, if you winner, bad runs cannot be perpetual. Variance is, by definition, the flipside to the norm. If you were loser, "varince upswings" would be the topic of discussion. SOme upswings would be ungodly long or violent. /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Got any charts that can handle a five figure downswing?

I'm in need of one....

Nah, 10-20 NL. Not really a big deal there, but it still hurts.

P.S., for that prop bet I offered Zen and Irie b4, i ended the 100 SNG's with a 43% ROI. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

It was called: "The Silence of the Daliman (long) "
