Hmm OK lets see. This was my first time there so this will be newbie-ish.

The woman and I get into town Wednesday afternoon and get to our room at the Tropicana. Mistake - helluva long walk to the Bellagio & especially the Mirage from south strip, at least for me since uhm I smoke and I don't exercise /forums/images/icons/wink.gif. No poker that day.

Thursday we make our way to the Bellagio in the afternoon and I get away for a bit. First off I was basically unimpressed by the Bellagio poker room. Its small, its dirty, its crowded (I'm used to 9 handed tables), I hate how dealers don't carry their own trays and need to make change from them, I hate how racks are allowed on the table, I hate how players can get the button twice in a row & and avoid paying a blind, I hate how money plays, I hate how dealers put tips in their shirt pocket (wtf?), I hate how twenty-f---ing-one chips fit into a row in a rack. Now that that's out of the way.. I get into a $15/$30 game eventually after I figure out I need to ask the people with the clipboards for it - and there's two of them and there's apparently no way of knowing what the status is of the lists and games going without asking them. Like I said, wasn't real impressed here. Anyways I play for a bit and swim around even for a while in a very tight game before this hand comes up. There's an MP limper and an LP raise, and I call in the SB for 4 chips with Ac4c. BB calls. Flop is A 4 3 rainbow, I bet and only LP calls. Turn is another A, I check, LP bets, I raise, she 3-bets, I 4-bet and she calls me down with AK. I leave after an hour and a half and +$350. We go off to do some stuff etc and I get away again around 9:30 and get back into a $15 that's a little better but still not a good game. There's a loose aggressive a few seats down from me that I get to isolate a few times - he got fed up with it eventually and open limped in MP and I raised on the button with TT. Blinds folded and he limp reraised, and I made it 4 bets /forums/images/icons/wink.gif and he check-folded on a ten high flop. Me and pocket tens had a good trip as you'll see later. Anyways I won a nice pot with AA a bit later and was up a bit when I saw Dewey Tomko walking around and I introduced myself to him and he chatted with me for a minute before taking off. I left around midnight after 3 hours of play and up another $350.

Friday I get a voicemail to meet the resident pokernerds at the Mirage at 7:30. I get there around 4 and get into a $10/$20 game. The Mirage poker room (area really, its in the open) is a lot nicer in my opinion but had the same odd rules that I don't really like. Anyways Tommy Angelo and the pokerbabe are both in my game and I burn away $100 quickly doing dumb stuff after I meet them. They start a new $20/$40 and Clarkmeister and Majorkong show up and I talk to them etc while playing. I ask the babe where I stand on the "LG" scale and I'm told I "have nice hair". Hmm... I lose a few more hands and am stuck a bit when seat 5 open raises in EP and I 3-bet from the BB with AK. Flop is ace high and I chop it up with his AK. Next orbit, the same player open raises in EP again and I 3-bet from the SB with TT. This time he 4-bets and I call. Flop is T-9-x. I check, he bets, I raise, and he calls. Turn is a J, I bet and he calls. River is a 7 putting backdoor diamonds on board. I bet, he raises, I 3-bet, he 4-bets all in and turns over.. AdKh. Oops. That puts me exactly even and I rack up. We all (other than the babe) buy some chips and head over to Dynasty's apartment for a home game after picking up beverages. Howard Burroughs and his wife also come along for a bit. We start playing dealers choice $3/$6 for limit games and $1-$1 for PL and play a few different games before eventually just playing PL hold'em with blinds that escalated to $2/$3. I have Tommy on my left, Dynasty across from me, and Clarkmeister to my right (majorkong gave up after a couple hours). I work up a fairly big stack for a while along with Tommy while Dynasty and CM were stuck. Eventually though I got more and more drunk and made some very dumb mistakes. #1, of course, was sitting to Tommy's right. #2 was paying off the ultratight Dynasty in a total misread and him doubling through me while he was shortstacked. #3 was not wanting to put my stack at risk. #4 was, well, drinking /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif But I had a great time and did learn a lot about PL, which I'm not very familiar with. Tommy's advice at the end was "when I have the button its not your turn to play" and he was of course very right. Anyways I eventually stumbled home -$40 in the home game after being up $200 /forums/images/icons/frown.gif Tommy was the big winner, I think Dynasty ended up near even (I'm pretty sure he was there but he may have been replaced by a little machine you put two cards into and it instantly spits them back out, not sure), CM down a bit and Majorkong (*cough*wuss*cough*) down also.

Saturday I get the chance to play a bit more at the Mirage $20/$40. I am up a bit when this hand comes up: UTG makes some sort of motion that I don't catch, 2UTG (fish) limps, and I raise with TT. But wait - UTG still has cards and hasn't acted. He limps in, fish limps also, I go ahead and raise, a blind calls, and UTG limp reraises. Duh. Anyways 4 to the flop for 3 bets. Flop is Q T x, thank god. UTG bets, fish calls, I raise, blind folds, UTG 3-bets, fish calls, I call. Turn is a blank, UTG thinks for some time and bets, fish calls, I raise and both call. River is an 8 and UTG check/calls/mucks and I take down a $700+ pot /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif I leave after 3 hours and +$565.

Play was on average tougher than I was used to but that was to be expected. On the "they play different here" note: $15/$30 hold'em at the bellagio - button open limps, SB raises, and there is no flop. $10/$20 7CS at the mirage that I was in for 15 minutes - low card brings it in for $3, a 7 limps, I complete to $10 with (A A) 9, and there is no 4th street. OK that's long enough for now - I left Sunday morning here after uhm a profit of $1225 for the trip in about 9 hours of play, ship it.

Tommy's advice at the end was "when I have the button its not your turn to play" and he was of course very right.

Fell out of my chair laughing. Confirms a lot of what I've heard about Tommy.

See you around, glad you had a good trip.

Playing (temporarily) in the full kill $5/$10 omaha 8 at the Mirage I pick up JT32ds on the button and limp in after a few limpers. Flop is A68r, BB bets out, limpers fold and I call. But the BB doesn't see me call and just turns over his cards - QJ42. The dealer informs him I called and he says "oh" and takes back his cards. The turn is a K and he bets? I raise of course, a couple people laugh, and he calls? The river is another 8 giving me nut low and jack high. The BB checks and calls and wins the high with his QJ... I just shrug and laugh...

Friday night/sat morning after the home game I help Majorkong carry the racks of chips back to the Mirage. I bring them up to counter with him and go stand outside of the poker room to smoke. I step on something and look down to find a $25 chip lying on the ground. I pick it up and look up to see a BJ dealer looking at me. I shrug and pocket it. Ship it! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I saw Dewey Tomko passing my $15/$30 table and introduced myself. Seemed like a very nice guy. He asked me where I was from etc, and commented on my large stack size /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif. He sarcastically invited me to come play in his Costa Rica casino, which I guess means he got screwed by Luis /forums/images/icons/wink.gif I let him go and he left with an absolutely stunning black girl half his age.

My stock response of "Baghdad!" to the strip sidewalk solicitors "friendly" inquiry of where we're from received several bewildered looks.

The players in Vegas (non tourists) were just about the rudest people I've ever seen. In the $20 at the Mirage on Saturday there was one terrible passive A2C foreigner who was losing of course but not heavily. Whenever he won a pot he would get heaps of ridicule/sarcasm put on him by the locals. Later on someone notices that a card (the Tc) has some of the paint on its back rubbed/scraped off. They destroy the card and a player asks for a setup. The dealer says "I'll just change the deck as the next dealer has to bring a new setup anyways". The player goes ballistic, screaming at the dealer, demanding a new setup. This guy by the way I had pegged as a strong player who was up significantly in the game. The dealer calls the top section host who just shrugs, says "change the deck", and walks away - top section at this time was 3 games. Needless to say the player continues throwing a fit, I just got fed up and pulled back my big blind that was rotting out there, tossed the dealer a redbird, and racked up and left. The staff at the Bellagio was just as bad/inattentive/rude. This is the poker capital of the world? I wanted to choke people, but settled for needling them whenever I could, i.e. complementing the fish on his hand and even going so far as saying stuff like "Good thing you're not bitter?" when their AK loses to Q3 which of course got me looks of death which I greatly enjoyed /forums/images/icons/wink.gif I am by the way 5'8" 150 /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

The home game was a lot of fun and I felt I played OK considering my seat position and the fact that someone kept handing me coronas. Wish I had a few less than I did but oh well.. actually wish I had a few less per day in general than I did the whole trip.. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif Not surprisingly there was not a lot of action in most of the games especially the limit games, although we got some pots playing triple high draw w/ 2 wild jokers (only wild game we played, I won a nice one by doing the elite 3 card draw with ace-joker on the first round and getting quads) and deuce to seven triple draw (where I drew one to 8654 on the final round and got... a 7). A rousin game of one card hold'em (Tommy's suggestion) also was some fun, but I got my pocket uhm ace ran down twice! We forgot to play PLIP though /forums/images/icons/frown.gif. I felt I played PLHE OK at least until the end but made some mistakes, the biggest being letting Dynasty double through me for $100 or so. Also calling short stacked Clarkmeisters all in when I had KJ on a QTx board while he had the nut flush draw probably wasn't a good idea either. In fact he doubled through me twice, which I guess means I was doing well for a while as I only lost $40 at the end. I think $3/$2 blinds was a little high, $2/$1 or $2/$2 would have worked out better I think and when were at 2/2 we had some good action. I also didn't figure out the obvious until it was late in the night - that being "hey, I have the button, its Dynasty's big blind, I can raise with any two cards every time and easily make a profit" /forums/images/icons/wink.gif. We played only three rounds of stud games, first being Razz (ugh), Howard's suggestion, and I called 7CS once which got no action as usual. We tried Mississippi stud as well with little success and no hands going past 4th(5th?) street. I'll be interested in hearing from the other participants what the outcome was as I'm not sure, all I know is Tommy killed us.

On the pokerrooms. I really dislike Bellagio too. It always feels uncomfortable and unfriendly and cramped and crowded. I much prefer the Mirage. I don't have much basis for comparison though since the only times I play in a live casino are my 2 annual trips to Las Vegas. But given a choice I will almost always spend more time at the Mirage than the Bellagio.

"I am by the way 5'8" 150"

I think you're exaggerating on both counts.

I suspect, although I do not know, that drawing to 8654 is a losing play in Deuce-to-Seven.

Nice meeting you.

As far as card room staffs being, "bad/inattentive/rude". I see this too, but there are plenty of nice rooms full of friendly staffs around town. Most of these rooms may have limits too low for your bankroll though.

What was it that came across bad/inattentive/rude besides the clipboard thing?

FWIW - My wife does not like to play there because the front brush is usualy rude and seems to hate his job. I've noticed this too. The female brushes that run the mid/high limit boards, I always feel do a great job from my limited experience in the room though.

The brushes at the Mirage, Orleans & Binion's are outstanding IMHO. The Orleans also has those great overhead TV screens that show where you are on the list.

Some of the smaller rooms are very customer oriented IMHO also.

As far as the local grumps and angle shooters. I agree there are way too many of them in the desert. However, that being said, I play almost every night without seeing too much unpleasantries at the tables, YMMV though.

Next time you are in Las Vegas, I hope you don't run into so many rude locals and rude & inattentive floor personel. There are some cool people out here too.

Best Wishes

Howard

At vehn_'s local room, there is a board up in front of the room where you can indicate your interest in any and all games. If the game is already going, you can see where you are on the list at any time, assuming your eyes are better than mine.

Funny, a guy I used to play in home games with bets the horses at Canterbury Park sometimes. He told me he was put off by the board.

The only other place I've played public poker is Foxwoods. I've played against a lot of people who have played in a lot of rooms, and lots of them tell us how good we have it here, especially the regulars at Harrah's East Chicago. If you want to find thing to bitch about, you can, but Canterbury Card Club is a very nice place to play.
