I'm new to Phoenix and wondering if anyone has any advice on where to go for NLHE.

Same here, but I'm curious to know if going during the day is worth it.

I have a week off from work coming up in October and my wife has to work during the day. I figured playing poker would be a good way to pass the time. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

However, if playing at night is better, then I would go at night instead of the daytime.

The last gaming compact negotiated as per a state wide referendum made any poker wager greater than $150 illegal. There can be no NLHE. There is 5-150 spread limit at Casino Arizona. There may be that game at other area poker rooms as well but I don't know. It's become very popular. Casino Arizona is the busier of the poker rooms in Metro Phoenix. Remember to go to the Indian Bend exit off loop 101. The McKellips Rd. location doesn't have poker. The poker room is in one side of a double tent but it's pretty nice. I'm told that a new building is being planned for that location.

Good luck.

Sheesh, I meant to answer you as well above.

I've always found the action at night to be much, much better. I'm speaking generally here because I only play limit games. I think that the 5-150 will be going in the afternoon but the drinking really starts later on and I think that helps. At night they usually have 3 games going.

As Howard already pointed out NL is not available in AZ.

The closest you will find is spread limit to x to 150. All the rooms spread the game, but you will only find it consistantly spread at Casino Arizona (CA).

The game at CA is 5-150 with 3/5 blinds and a 350 max buy-in. It plays a lot like NL unless you have a lot of action PF, then it plays more like limit. Think of it this way... Someone raises to 40 (not an uncommon raise) and there are a total of five people to the flop, you now have a 200 pot with a max bet of 150...

The best nights for the CA 5-150 game is Tues and Wens as there is a nightly 130 MTT on those nights and Fri and Sat. Friday/Sat late is better than evening with all the drunk clubers coming in after the bars close.

Playing during the day, is -EV for the 5-150 game... This is when the regulars are getting in, getting comfortable and warmed up. Avoid them...

If you are interested in NL, ask around the rooms, you may or maynot get an answer, players around here are somewhat protective of their hunting grounds. There are a lot of NL private games around, from very small (.05/10 20 max) to freaking massive (10/20 no cap that plays like 100/200 with people buying in for 20K plus). But be warned, you may find yourself in something like moment from rounders...

I agree with everything said thus far about Casino AZ. I actually prefer to play the 2 - 150 spread at Form McDowell late at night on the weekends if they have one going. I have found it to be extremely soft, and almost always +EV if you play right and are sober /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I fully agree.

The only problem, is it is a 50/50 if they can even get the game going on any given night, including Friday and Saturday. If it does go, it ends when the nightly MTT starts and 90% of the time doesn't start up again when people start busting out.

The Fort is nice. Great dealers, most of the floor are great, servers are fast and nice, and when she is working has the hottest server in any room in AZ. The computerised board is nice too.

I just hate driving out there (not that much further than CA for me) looking to play some spread, only to find that there has been the same four people on the wait list for the last 8 hours and that they are likely not even in the room now. Oh well jump in car, drive to CA and get on the list for the game...
