For all you wanna be chessplayers out there, yahoo ratings are inflated by 1000's of percents. 30,000 is a decent rating. Come to the icc for real games.

Someone suggested that you could add 200 points to your ICC rating and get a real one. Not a chance. I am 2000 USCF and 2150 ICC. My name is gutterball. I have been as high as 2300, and I am not that good.

Yes, but it's also clear that ICC ratings fluctuate a lot. If you are US 2000 and ICC 2150, that's about the correlation he was talking abkout. It would take ages to get from 2150 to 2300 US, but on ICC a few good wins in a row can do it.

Oh no!! Not again!

FICS (www.freechess.org) unless you are an >2000 strength player. The free server has plenty of opposition in the 1500-2000 range. The ICC has more of the stronger opposition.

As for ratings, a player who played on all three would see:

FICS rating

I should have included the Blitz and 5-minute ratings in my comparison for purposes of adding 100-200 points. I see many blitz players playing several hundred points or more below their highs. It is not all that uncommon to see a player with say 2100 current Standard rating and 2050 Blitz high playing at 1610 Blitz.

Anyway, any idea as to why the new 5-minute category of ratings is so low compared to Blitz and Standard ratings? I think it appears so low that there must be a bug...I mean I see 2150 Standard players with current 5-minute ratings of 1520 while their Blitz is more like 1900-2050. ICC says it is the most accurate rating but why on earth would there be such great discrepancies...just finger some of the players and see the wide gulf.

I am talking about blitz ratings. I have a friend the same age as me, 21, who is USCF master and 2400 ICC blitz. Who knows about standard.

From what I hear the fics ratings are deflated. 1900 there translates to 2100 or so.

Well what is his 5-minute category rating (not 5-minute Blitz, I mean the new category)? Why do you think these ratings tend to be so disparate?
