So I didn't see it on the TV news or anything, but I read an article about it. Apparently a Jet Blue plane had some landing gear issues and had to make an emergency landing yesterday.

The article I read said that the Jet Blue TVs weren't turned off, which means that the people in the plane had to opportunity to watch the landing as they were doing it.

So...

I'd rather watch myself landing than be one of the people's families watching on TV. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

On CNN last night they said a Jet Blue official stated that the TV's in the plane WERE turned off, just like they would be on any other landing flight... maybe he was lying though?

And I know it was talked about yesterday, but that landing was damn impressive.

From a business perspective, do you guys think Jet Blue is going to be hurt by this? It would be shame if they are, their prices are really low, and seems that the service was very good otherwise.

The TVs were on as they were circling the airport so they could see the coverage then. As they actually came in for the landing the TVs were turned off... is an any normal landing.

Isn't Jet Blue the one that gives everyone basically first class room and mini TVs and [censored]? That combined with how easy the pilot made that landing look should keep any damage to a minimum.

During emergency landing wouldn't the passenger's heads be between their knees?

Anyway, it certainly was an impressive landing.

The question would be does the seemingly superb landing make up for the possibly shitty plane maintenence.

i would want to watch myself but the tv's im pretty sure were stored in the off position.

also, in an emergency landing, passangers are instructed to take emergency landing positions which usually entails hugging your legs. so unless a TV is on the floor, you couldn't really watch it anyways

on the landing, i was extremely impressed. it was pointed out that a maintenance crew could be at fault, and that would detract from JB's safety, however, the pilots handled themselves extraordinarily and im sure safety inspection after this will be beefed up to prevent a similar occurance.

im with astro, im MORE likely to fly JB...if they only served my area /images/graemlins/frown.gif

One of the better OOT Polls I have seen, actually made me think a bit.

Indicates that the passengers were watching the television coverage.

I honestly think it would be extremely hard not to watch it if I had the opportunity.

As for flying Jet Blue, this doesn't make me any less inclined to fly them. What makes me less inclined to fly them is that they really aren't the "low cost" carrier they used to be. Fares have steadily escalated the last 18 months or so.

i'm fairly sure there's a 5 second delay between real life events and when you see them on a live satellite feed. so that really wouldn't make for entertaining tv knowing what already happened...

I've flown JetBlue 8 roundtrips SF<->NYC in the past few months. JetBlue is great.

I was flying JetBlue yesterday on an NYC->SF flight while this was going on. You can stand up and see what all the people in front of you are watching. I was watching the news when the plane coverage came on. Little by little, all the TV channels ended up switching to and staying on a news channel showing the JetBlue flight. Was amusing. Big cheer throughout the plane when the plane landed successfully.

You are aware that a very significant cost is substantially higher, right?

I was in the Hustler Casino at the time, and people were slowly gathering around the TV during the circling period. Being that it was local, everyone had major interest in this.

I found it pretty thrilling to watch, and it was a very welcoming and refreshing sound to hear hundreds of gamblers erupt in applause when the plane landed safely.

I fly them all the time (good prices from LAS to JFK nonstop) and after seeing that I'm happy I do. Plane malfunctions, and the pilot still brings it in safely. I think it's a terrific ad for the company.

You can't always avoid mechanical malfunctions since there are uncontrollable variables. You can make sure that you have an excellent pilot, though.

The TV's were on until 10 minutes before the plane landed, when they were all shut off.

Gee really? Planes use fuel? Thanks for the friggin' tip.

My anecdotal experience is that JetBlue's fares began rising well before the recent spike in oil prices, and have risen by a higher magnitude than competitors. Whereas a search used to nearly always reveal JetBlue as the lowest (or very close to the lowest) fare for a given itinerary, I find this is now rarely the case.

But thanks for realizing what I was saying and not being a dick....oh, wait...it's OOT.
