After how you played it, I think you ought to call the river. However, I think you should have bet the turn, as any heart or overcard will be bad for you.

How likely is it that the Villian would check behind on the turn with a flush?

I suppose if he felt like you held the non /images/graemlins/heart.gif AK that it would be a safe play in the hopes that you hit your pair, but I don't know that many people that would try it.

Perhaps the river would have been a good time for a blocking bet, getting you a cheaper showdown than checking it did.

As it is, I think you need to call because you could be facing a bluff from someone with either the A or K of /images/graemlins/heart.gif, TT, or 88. I think QQ, KK, or AA would have either re-raised you preflop or defintely raised you on the flop.
