I regularly play in a home .25c/.50c NL game. Most of the players are only casual players. Everyone usually buys in for $20, but as everyone here knows that is a short buy in for that structure.

I've recently started buying in for $50 or $40 while everyone else buys in for $20. Everyone seems cool with it, but for some reason I think that they may feel I'm being a bully when I buy in for that much. I don't want to come off taking as the game too serious. What do you guys think?

If the rules allow it and everyone has the option to buy in for the same amount I don't see anything wrong with you buying in for $40 or $50 instead of $20.

Obviously this is bothering you enough that you are seeking the approval of others, I would suggest buying in for $20 to clearing your conscience.

Why are you buying in deep if you DON'T plan on being a bully?

Was there a point to this post, or are you looking for a group hug?

Anyone wanna make an over/under prop on how many times the word "dick" gets used in this thread?

We had a guy buy in for 200 big blinds in the game I recently played at. No big deal.

If nobody seems bothered by it this is a real non-issue. Buy in for whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Yes there was a point if you had read the post.
I like to buy in for around 100 blinds because I can actually play poker with that amount instead of playing short stack all in poker.

Rest of the people that have responded thanks, I was just wondering how buying in for more than everyone else is viewed in your games.

Serious answer: They will take you more seriously and think yr a dink (no c) at first but so what? If you have the right table image for a home game then they'll soon overlook it.

Right: Being happy, making jokes, laughing at losses, tipping (if called for), making crazy side bets, occasionally showing down a losing pisspoor hand, etc.
Wrong: Wearing sunglasses and berating people.

In a good game people are paying more attention to what you say than how you play. So buy in for the correct amount but let them think its because yr a total gambl0r.

Most games have a minimum and maximum buy in, if this game doesn't, by all means buy in for $40-$50. Unless of course it will do damage to your conscience.

My friend told me about a similar situation. He bought in for 20 but other people were buying 40 or 50. It didn't really seem fair to him because the different stacks threw off the game.

I've never heard of min/max buyins for NL. I've only heard of a set amount with rebuy up to that amount. For example, you should set the game at 20NL so buy in is at $20 and if under, option to rebuy up to $20 or if over, then that's it.

Why is $20 short buy in for that structure? You're buying in for 40bb. At the casino $100NL tables, blinds are 2/4, which is 25bb. If you're concerned the blinds are too large for that amount, I suggest lowering it to .10/.20 (100bb), or .20/.40 (50bb), but I think .25/.50 (40bb) is just right for $20, assuming they'll rebuy if they get busted. One problem I usually have is someone going all in, busting out, and not wanting rebuy another $20, so you have one less player. So we usually play 5NL .05/.10, and people are willing to put up $5 at a time up to their $20 that they were planning to play anyways. This keeps the game going longer and makes it more fun.

Usually the maximum is 50-100 BB, and the minimum 10-20 BB.

I would buy in for about 10k if I played with you and your friends. I would go all in every time, and eventually I'd have all the money if no one quit.

You're a dick. There's always a bigger fish than you.

Yep, ya got me. I came up with that without reading a word.

Who cares? It's your game that matters here. And you DO know that you're not really getting to play with $50, in effect, right?

How?

.25/.50 should be the standard blinds for $50 buy in. But the .25/.50 seems to be the standard for these little games. Probably because it's a pain in the ass to do .15/.25 blinds with normal chips.

What's the problem with taking the game a little seriously? I assume you're all there because you like poker, and you ran the buy in thing by your friends. I think you can still joke around with your buddies, have a couple drinks, and play some strong slightly drunk poker.

If someone asks why you buy in that big, say you think that it gives you an advantage, but you'd be willing to buy in for 20 if they didn't think that was fair.
