View Full Version : down over 70k hands

09-19-2005, 07:08 PM
I've been full timing 1/2 .5/1 NL on 8 tables for a little over 2 1/2 months....started playing poker in april and i've averaged something like 3-3.5k a month since i started in .25/.5 so I know that I'm not a losing player and I've been consistently beating the limits that I play now...

But anyway this month i've hit a sick maybe 70 thousand hand slide, i'm not down that much at all, around -700 excluding rake

My question is though...i've gotta know, is this normal..I've never heard of a winning player still being in the red after this many hands...Is this time to panic and start going back and analyzing my whole game that's worked great for the last 5 months? Or do I continue to ride it out?

You could try reducing the number of tables you are doing. Decreasing the tables generally increases winrate.

I'd be worried.

A downsing over that many hands at those limits is not varience.

Theres something wrong with your game.

How do you play 70k hands in a month?

Anyway, if you're in the red after 70k hands you have leaks in your game. Sorry.

that's alot... you have to include the rake...bad bad play over that many hands...the biggest downswing i've seen a winning player take is about 18k hands. It's very common for players to go through 10k at even/slightly below, but that includes the rake.

You should be analyzing your game regardless of how you're running.

A year ago I made this post (http://archiveserver.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=genpok&Number=1404297&Foru m=,,,,,,,,All_Forums,,,,,,,,&Words=&Searchpage=8&L imit=25&Main=1404297&Search=true&where=bodysub&Nam e=19749&daterange=1&newerval=1&newertype=y&olderva l=&oldertype=&bodyprev=#Post1404297). I was down $1,400 over 50k hands at NL$100 after being a big winner.

I still don't know what the heck happened back there. I think it was the combination of hideous luck which then tilted me a few times. Regardless, I am now up 11k over 32,000 hands at NL$200 so I think it is safe to say I am not a loser.

Bad streaks happen. Some are horrible. If you analyze your play and can't find anything wrong then suck it up and keep playing. For weeks I tried to figure out what was wrong and although, thinking back, I can think of a few minor leaks, I cannot for the life of me figure out what would be responsible for making me a loser over 50k hands. So...I kept at it and everything has worked out.

Good luck to you.

You have 8 total posts. You need to post more. This will certainly help...

Yeah, 17k hands and losing is not a good sign. I'd cut way back the number of tables you are playing. At 8 tables, you can't do anything but play simple ABC NL, which is bad enough. But It sounds like your ABC game has some problems as well.

just curious, do you mean "-700 excluding rake" as in you are actually down something like $5700, but 5000 of that is rake, because that is very different from being down 700 after the rake (i.e. being down 700 net).

That was 70k hands, NOT 17k...

09-20-2005, 07:40 PM
No...I'm making just over 2k a month in rake so I'm still up about 1400 altogether for the month...but I don't like to count it because it's just free money I'm not actually making it 'playing' the game, so...without it I'm still down over a huge # of hands.

You must not know very many winning players then. I'd say half of the players I know have had worse than 18k losing streaks.

ive had over a 20K losing streak at 2/4.

The answer to ur question is even easier when u consider the stakes that ur playing. Plug the leaks

I know for sure of two very very very big winners on this forum who have endured 30k+ hand slides.

That's about 50 hrs. of shorthanded play on four tables. I guarantee you, there are plenty of winning players who have had downswings much longer than that.

18,000 hands is a lot of hands to be down at this level. It can happen - and I'm sure it does - to some winning players, but at the micro-limits, I'd be concerned and definitely recommend dropping your tables in half (minimum!) in order to find where there are problems.

What are you losing with? Why?

While you're at it, reread your books - maybe take a few days / a week off and JUST read and then come back to everything fresh...

This seems unbelievable. I find it odd you played 70k hands without noticing you had some leaks and you take some time last night and find them and now it's go time??

Last month I played 38,000 hands. It was ~80% 2/4NL and the rest 3/6NL and 5/10NL. I received $2100 back from RB.

The biggest problem was turning into a robot, so I dropped back down to 4 tables for a little bit & turned the tv off...I still think most of it was the cards though, a cold streak that long is possible.

back on track now...but even though i'm winning again i get way too frustrated at the smallest beat so it's time for a break.

-tv off
-cut tables in half
-play 8 hours a day
-read every morning(2+2)

and everytime i noticed a symptom of tilt(ex - not believing people when they raise me, chasing) i wrote it down to help me later when i'm in that stage where i don't know if it's the cards or if it's me, just like a tilt checklist...might just be me but I think things through a lot more clearly when I put it to paper.
