i'm genuinely curious as to how many people think ten is the best rock album of the 90s. i'm pretty sure such a poll has been done before, though, and i don't feel like making a new one.

while I'm a big fan of a lot of the bands mentioned, and the albums truly are great, Ten has got to be the best. I just wrote about a paragraph trying to prove this, and you just have to listen to it...Garden and Release are two of my favorites that should definitely be checked out if you don't know them...

As both a huge Weezer and Pearl Jam fan, I love this thread already. The funny part is I just had this convo the other day with several friends. It really is almost too close to call here. I can make the analogy that it is like chocolate and vanilla ice cream...you like them both a lot, but you must like one more than the other...anyway, lets do a little comparision (cause frankly I dont wanna study any more Bio) of the two albums....

Lead off track:
Ten: Once
Blue: My Name is Jonas
A lead off track is a key component of a good album...it sets the tone and is the first impression of the artist.
Adv: Weezer

The singles:
Ten: Jeremy, Even Flow, Alive
Weezer: Undone, Buddy Holly, Say it ain't so
THe singles are usually the overall top quality songs on the album, and IMO these two dont differ from the norm. Buddy Holly is my favorite Weezer song, probably my favorite song period. But the combo of Even Flow and Alive is much better than Undone and Buddy Holly, but I think that the end track single is better on Weezer.
Adv:Ten

Other songs:
Ten: Why Go, Black, Oceans, Porch, Garden, Deep Release
Weezer: No one else, The world has turned, Surf Wax America, In the garage, Holiday, Only in Dreams
Both are very deep albums, but I think that in the end Weezer had better other songs on the albums. The World has turned and In the Garage are much better than Black and Why Go, although they arent that far apart.
Adv: Weezer

Lasting Impressions
While Ten has been out longer, I think Weezer was more influential and has aged better. It was more original and is the basis for half of the bands today. I guarenntee that every Emo act today got their roots from Weezer
Adv: Weezer

Overall: Weezer
While Ten is good, the Blue Album is just a hair better.

Wasnt even the best Manics album nevermind best of the 90's they should have done what they said and split after their first album as imho they have become a parody of the industry they were apparently against they havent so much as destroyed british rock and roll but invited it in and got into bed with it and now brings it cups of cocoa every couple of years. Generation Terrorists is still a brilliant album though.

GATS is easily better than Generation Terrorists which is far too undeveloped. If you'd said The Holy Bible was a better album I wouldn't argue (although I don't agree) but suggesting GT is better than GATS is lunacy, the Manics were still in their infancy with their first album and while some of it is excellent, some if mediocre at best.

when 10 came out it blew me away, however it never held up as well as other albums of its era as i grew tired of eddie vedder's voice.

i dont know, 10 was good for like 5 years, but now has fallen to mediocre on my list. definately an important album in its own right though, just as nirvana's nevermind or radiohead's ok computer. its influence is expansive.

Sure, hard core techno punk. In 1997 with Radiohead's OK Computer, Fat of the Land hit like a bombshell. The first time you heard Firestarter it is impossible not to have said "WTF is that?". This postrave ultrapunk sound was incredibly original. Smack My Bitch Up - great adrenalizer, Shahin Bada's Indian guest vocalizations are amazing and the best video ever - first to be banned on MTV I think. Women's groups up in arms, and SMBU recently voted the most dangerous song to drive to, lol. With Breathe, Mindfields, and Fuel My Fire, Fat of The Land can actually be seen as a kind of compilation of singles collection to Brits but to North Americans it was an incredibly fresh new package. Firestarter, with its dirty techno sound, alone scared the crap out of UK parents and who the hell when they first saw this guy, below, didn't say, "Holy crap, that guy is [censored]!" Monster album, truly original, extra marks for controversy.

Welp, I tried to upload a track and it ain't workin', might try later.

Keith Flint is the crazy dude, but he is just the front man for the Prodigy, doesn't do anything except dance around and scream some lyrics. Last years album, despite having the best title ever, Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned, really stank...I was so looking forward to it too. But, although FOTL is, of course, not the greatest album, (it is inconsistent), I honestly don't remember any other time I heard a song, Firestarter, Breathe, or SMBU, and went, "wait a minute, what the hell is THAT?!?"... Radiohead didn't do it.

i'm probably the only one who thinks ok computer is overrated.

You're not alone.

There are a ton of people who think this album is overrated. And by ton, I mean a shitload.

This is very understandable. However, this is not becaues it is actually overrated but because it is way way less accesible then it at first seems. I think 98% of people who think it is overrated have not listened to it enough or well enough. OK Computer is unquestionably the best rock album of the 90's.

Edit: emphasis on the "well enough" part. This is really crucial, this is an album you cant listen to on a plane or with a friend who you dont like (who loves it) etc. You really need the music to be clear and your mind free of bias etc.

I think it's probably one of the big four, but just to open up the discussion.

King for a Day? really? depending on what your parameters for "rock" are, I can certainly see Ten, OK Computer, and several others posted as good candidates. I personally was going to recommend Angel Dust, and then I came across you posting this. You think this record is better than Angel Dust?

actually, come to think of it, Mr. Bungle's Calfornia is definitely one of my favorite albums of the 90's, but I don't know that it's a "rock" album per se.

It's Ten and it's not even close. Not only was it a great album that you can listen to front-to-back, with great singles and good mood songs...it also completely revolutionized rock vocals. All of a sudden, the talented, tormented baritone vocalist was not relegated to backing up a man who could sing 1st soprano...all of a sudden it was the alto male vocalists who were singing high harmony backup vox. With a few exceptions, it is still that way today. On substance, style, popularity, and musical influence...it's Ten...and it's not even close.

I thought angeldust was horribley overproduced at the time, King for a Day at the time I felt had 1 good song will have to listen to some of these albums again, The Real thing obviously was and 80's album but it was so fresh and different and was somthing te band never for me captured again.

Another vote for ten.

OK Computer, Nevermind, and Siamese Dream all come close though.

I really think, King For a Day... is a vastly under appreciated album; it has this Pink Floyd quality I really can't place it.

I don't think its the best album of the 90s but it's fun to talk about all these good albums.
