I don't know why, but it seems if people don't know how to correctly set up a chess board they do it wrong more than 50% of the time. You would figure it should be about 50/50. Check out displays in stores next time you are by one. Some of the people setting up the displays must know how to do it correctly so odds are that it should be set up correctly more than 50% of the time. It's not even close though.

Best one I saw was in the Tower of London. Big set. Sideways.

Was just over at Negreanu's site seeing if there were any udpates on the BG match. Front page was some weekend at Danny's contest. I flip through the pics and find 2 doofuses playing chess, and first thing I notice is they have the board sideways. Then I look closer and it isn't their fault. The board is part of the coffee table and has been inlaid sideways. Who would buy that?

Playing with a dark square in the bottom-right corner has no influence at all ont he game.

true, but what if you went to a casino and the blinds, button, and action went counterclockwise. i think you'd give a "WTF!?!"

You are correct sir, but if one wants to play by the rules there is only one correct way to set up the board.

F.I.D.E. Laws of Chess
Article 1: The Chessboard
1.2 The chessboard is placed between the players in such a way that the near corner to the right of each player is white.

But you are free to ignore all rules in a friendly game.

Do clocks run the other way over there?

I was exaggerating obviously, but if you've played HU on an NL table you will know what I'm talking about.

Neither does having Black moving first--but we don't do that either.

Except that if you went by the rule that the queen goes on her own color, then you'd set up the board wrong.

While I suppose this is technically true ... the rules dictate white on right. The issue becomes more important when you gain even the slightest knowledge on important things like openings and end game strategies. As you work on various attacks and defenses you tend to think of King side and Queen side. If you screw up the setup things get switched. Better to play by the rules, period.

I learned the the mnemonic "white is right" for setting up a chess board. Or was it when going to my KKK meetings, I forget.
