View Full Version : B&M PLO in Chicago

Last Friday/Saturday night was one of my trips to get away from my computer and play in the casinos in NW indiana. My normal game is the 2/5 NLHE at Trump, so I started there. I made a little money, but I got bored of that and I knew that the 10/20 LHE game over at Resorts was pretty good, so I headed over there.

The game was pretty loose, but I was playing too laggy for the circumstances and I was losing. Then one of the other players mentioned that he was on the list for Omaha. I asked if he meant the 5/10 O8 game that was going at the time. He said, no: he was waiting for Pot Limit. This was music to my ears. I had heard stories about how this casino used to be the PLO capital of the Midwest, but I could never find a game. It got to the point that on all of my infrequent trips to Resorts, I would pester the dealers and floormen about it, but most of them told me that the game used to run but its dead now.

A little bit of background. PLO has become my bread and butter game online recently. The chairs at the 2/4 tables on Stars have an imprint of my ass. I had always wanted to play the game in casinos, but its almost impossible to find, even in Vegas. The only chance I've had was single table satellites and the $1500 event at the WSOP this year. Even then, there was no cash game action except for high stakes action that I was staying away from. Suffice it to say that B&M PLO was something I was looking for.

I wandered over to the podium around 6, and sure enough there were 6 people on an interest list for a 5/10 PLO game. To be honest, my bankroll isn't big enough to play 5/10 regularly, but BY GOD if I had enough money on me to take a shot, I was going to. I sign up and head back to the 10/20. I figure its 50/50 that it will get off, but those odds are a lot better than usual. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif An hour or two later, I talk to to the floor and he said they would try to get it off around 8PM. 8:30 or so, they start running down the names on the list and they decide to start it shorthanded.

I got to talk to some of the guys before the game started about the game's past. They said that the game ran for 5-6 years, sometimes up to 3 nights a week. There would be people coming in from all over the country to play this game, because its extremely hard to find in casinos in the states, even in Vegas. On busy nights, they could get 3 tables running. But in January, most of the regulars the game was built around left and the game almost died. They claimed that it still ran on Saturday nights, but I never saw it before.

We got started around 9 PM 4 handed. I bought in for $600 which was enough to cover the table. The game was pretty loose. I played quite a few hands, but I was getting good cards. These guys seemed pretty friendly with each other and besides the loose action it was a fun game to play.

I only played 2 hands after the flop, mostly because the game broke quickly. We had picked up a 5th player when I called a raise out of the SB with Q-J-9-8 ss. The flop came 8-8-6 and I check raised the raiser for most of my stack. He folded Kings. The other hand, I limped on the button with K-K-Q-2 ss along with 2 others. Flop came Kc-5c-4. 1st to act made a $20, CO called, I made it $80 and both called. Turn comes a 9 and I bet $300. BB called all in for $150 and the CO also called. Turn came a club and the CO bet $100. I called on the oft chance that he had a busted straight draw instead of a flush draw and he showed a ten high flush. The all in quy had a Q high flush. The dealer didn't have enough chips for me to rebuy so I waited in line at the cage. By the time I got back, the 5th guy left and another guy was down to $100. He busted out, another player left this now 3 handed game to play NLHE and the game broke. The game lasted a grand total of 30 minutes.

I'm glad I got the chance to play despite losing the money. It was a fun game and I think it would be profitable if it lasted longer. I'll probably be playing at Resorts more on Saturday nights to see if this game gets off, so if you're a Midwest PLO player I hope to see you there.

Iron81,

Resorts is the old Harrah's right? They used to spread a regular twice weekly 5-10 game that morphed into a 10-25 game eventually. I can't believe this game died, as the lists were quite long for it usually, there were some big stacks. Are they still running the other 'big games'? The 100-200 mixed, etc?

I played in that game perhaps a half dozen times, and it was extremely good. There is a weekly 5-10 PLO game that runs in detroit as well.

At the WSOP this year, there was great action in the high limit PLO games, but the 2-5 game ran about every other day in the low limit area. It was usually pretty tight, but I made a good profit in my 3 or 4 sessions there by raising preflop and stealing on the flop.

During tournaments there is very good PLO action in tunica, the 5-5 (or 2-5 can't remember which it was) had as much action as the 10-25 did.

I haven't made a trip to the riverboats in about a year, but if there's a PLO game going, I'll make a run for the border.

The biggest game I ever saw at Resorts was 40-80 holdem. Last night Resorts (old Harrahs) had 2 tables of 20-40. Although most of the action at Trump is low limit, they also have the biggest game in Chicago. Recently Trump has been doing a 10-25 mixed game: half NLHE and half PLO. Sometimes this gets bumped up to 25/50.
