How do you take horrible beats like this and simply move on?

These were the three hands that took most of my chips in the Deep Stacks tournament on 'Stars yesterday. I really feel that I deserved to AT LEAST make the final table with the way I was playing. I basically went from being the chip leader to being eliminated in less than 10 minutes. I know that stuff like this happens, but it seems a bit fishy.

In the first hand, I don't like the flop check, I'm betting out here to gauge where I stand. then the 3rd 4 came and you only half potted it. I'd be betting 2/3, or the pot. You got really lucky that the 3rd 4 came, and now very little beats you, but I'm scared that an overcard can EASILY come on the river and I'm beat. I think that hand, though not terribly played, was partially your fault.

The other two, those guys hit 20%ers on you, it happens. Yesterday I made top two on an AT8 board and called a push from A9... And he made a running straight to put me out, it happens.

Have to agree here.

As for the other 2 hands, the 2nd one you lost your 20% of the time, wasn't a lock or a fish, he took a shot with his short stack with what looked to him to be the best hand.

On the 3rd hand, seems like a bit of tilt going on playing a mid pair like that....considering the action in front of you, albeit from what are most likely wide ranges considering the stacks, I still think I take a breather here and collect my thoughts and regroup.

If this is the worst string of beats youve had count yourself as lucky. Once you "move on" and lose to five 2 outers in a row that were clearly priced out of the hand on the flop you'll look back at this and say "Wow, what a whiner I was".

I was pretty sure my eights were good on that third hand. I had been pushing the table around with ragged aces and air, and as such, I don't think it would take much for the short stacks to push. I was expecting to see a hand like K-Q or A-10, but the situation was better than I expected. I was a bit too pissed to get much sleep last night though, so give me a break. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Those are some brutal beats but I don't like how you played the first hand at all. The flop check was weak and you probably should have bet the turn harder. Other than that what can you do?

I was planning on check-raising the flop, but in retrospect, I do see this as a horrible mistake. He wasn't an unreasonable player, and I doubt many would fall for that type of trap when raised 3x their bet preflop. His turn call was a bit questionable though. There's no way I could believe that my ace high is good if I were in his position. I guess I should've bet out larger on the turn instead of trying to extract additional chips on the river. Sometimes that strategy backfires on you, but the hand was still a bad beat, damnit!

Yeah, I think everyone knew you were trying to check/raise on the flop, that was the first thought that went through my mind also. HOWEVER, in this situation, because you're probably ahead, but your hand is *very* vulnerable, you have to bet out to protect yourself against a check behind, and also represent your hand. Check/raising flops I've come to realize in the last month is something that's waaay over done in online poker, I think the check/raise is way over used in general too. But I wouldn't be check raising here with any less than AK on an A/Kxx board, where I know my hand is made and has relativly little chance of being killed. For you, a little less than half the deck can destroy your hand.

A high becomes a fairly powerfull hand w/ 3 of a kind on the board. I'm not saying his play was good, but b/c of your flop check, and your relativly weak bet on teh turn, he probably figured he had a good chance of his A high being good, or maybe his Jack was better than your kicker. He also has position. It's not a terrific call, but if he had a read, and he has position, I can see his logic.

Is that pf reraise with pocket 9s standard here, or did you have a read, and what was villian's range? I rarely make a reraise with this hand, but I realize you have a huge stack.

You shoulda bet the flop. I make this kind of mistake a lot and am trying to lead out instead of slowplay when I think I have the best hand. He made a mistake calling the turn bet, but he may have folded if you bet the flop and turn.

I had a decent read on him. He would've made a 5-6x bb raise with a large pocket pair, but he also knew that I had been bluffing a lot to take advantage of hands that don't get made on the flop. A few people had caught on to this, which is how I lost 100k in chips before the pocket 9s hand.
