View Full Version : Clarky in Cali: Midpoint trip report from Commerce

Clarkmeister, Dynasty and D.Andrew left the Mirage on Monday morning for the fertile California poker pastures. After a brief stop in Baker to debate the merits of the "Worlds Tallest Thermometer" they continued on unmolested into the City of Angels.

On our arrival at Commerce, we immediately sought out room manager Glenn, who remembered us from November and promptly set us up with the casino rate for our rooms. No hassle and he remembered us. So do all the floor people. We are all amazed. This is by far the best staff of any casino I have ever played in. I play in the Mirage almost daily and there are people who don't know my name. People here remember me from one trip 3 months ago. Amazing.

I start playing at the 6-12, and the game is a bit tighter than last time I was in town. I don't know if this has to do with the change to a rake from the dead button drop, but it is noticable. It is still a wealth of looseness compared to most Vegas games.

I promptly fail to catch a hand and am down most of mt $300 buy in. But then I catch a mini-rush, capped by a hand where I flop quad jacks on the button. I check the flop, and there is a bet and 3 callers to me on the turn when I raise. No one calls on the river, but I love the turn action. I rack up shortly thereafter a $154 winner.

After eating, I come down and drop $500 in the 6-12. No hands except for a few steals. Lost a big pot with AQ on an ATT3 board when pocket 77 goes all in on the turn and spikes his 7 on the river heads up. Not the way I wanted to end the first day, but so it goes. Dynasty got table share of a bad beat in the 4-8 game and D.Andrew did well also. I'm the only Day One loser in the group /images/frown.gif .

Day 2 is much better. I run well in the 4-8 and rack up a $423 winner after about 3 hours. The highlight was having 67s in the SB when the turn was 2-3-4-5 rainbow. I got all the lone aces and a lone 6 stuck for capped betting on the turn. When the river was an 8, my straight was REEEEAL long.

We eat and I sit in the 9-18 for a long session which saw me rack up a $650 winner. After dinner I hit it for another $150. Big day to atone for Day One.

I looked for Vince Lepore who said he was going to be in town, but no sign.

The place was packed. Top level games were plentiful last night with 3 15-30's, five 20-40's, five 30-60's and four 40-80's. Talk about game selection. A 150-300 stud game has been going nonstop since our arrival also.

Combine the game selection, the $79 poker room rate and the superb staff and it's hard to imagine playing anywhere else. Hopefully the next 2 days go well also.

Good report. I've never really played in California. (1 hr. in Palm Springs) I might have to go see some relatives soon. Er, maybe they'll come by the Commerce if I'm in town. :-)
