What was your plan on this flop if he bets?

And is it common that people raise 8xBB and just give up?

i was going to play it by ear, but mostly i was intending to try to get my chips in as fast as possible. he pretty clearly did wind up having AK here or something very close to it, and somehow didn't make a continuation bet.

i would have decided mostly based on the size of the bet, but i had the guy mildly labeled as a donk who i didn't think would make that type of raise with AA or KK. QQ maybe. my call was to trap (risky) my check was to checkraise.

i was going to play it by ear, but mostly i was intending to try to get my chips in as fast as possible. he pretty clearly did wind up having AK here or something very close to it, and somehow didn't make a continuation bet.

i would have decided mostly based on the size of the bet, but i had the guy mildly labeled as a donk who i didn't think would make that type of raise with AA or KK. QQ maybe. my call was to trap (risky) my check was to checkraise.

I'll continue with stupid questions.

How quickly do you sniff out the scared money in these? How exploitable are they early on?

I find the demographics of steps interesting, in particular the mini steps. It seems to me that a good player should be able to find a lot of edges that aren't present in lets say the 215s.

reply, i left out:

i don't often find that the big raises don't get continued on the flop, sadly, that's why i checked to the damn guy. they usually fold their missed AKs, but they don't check behind. damnit.

the scared money is there, the problem is that they play scared right from teh start, which means that there's a tightness to the games that often makes it hard to accumlate chips until later. they play so tight that they usually wind up alive later, as in all the other steps games. makes the later game a bit harder than when people just donk around early. i tend ot chat a bit with the table, particularly at the normal steps, and directly ask people if they bought in or stepped up. i find the dynamic quite interesting as well, but i find it more interesting at the steps than the ministeps /images/graemlins/smile.gif

i find the scared money much easier to exploit in the later game (bubble on) than in the early game. the ministeps i don't really think i like (beat em, but not for bloody much so far), with their weird "some players win but lose" structure, tehy just are really really weird for some reason. i don't like the pay structure were basically only 1st and 2nd pay, and don't pay that much. for that reason, i rarely play these things, since they aren't better structured for me than say, the 200s. however, it's always nice to change it up every once in a while, and i don't believe myself to be a loser at these games.

none of this is to say there aren't chips to be made early in these games. i'm just not going to say that i did any of that in this game, because a) i'm pretty sure i played this one bad b) i haven't looked at the hands.

there are no stupid questions.

Wow... I learned a lot from you making obvious plays, winning flips, and sucking out on the end. Folding in +EV spots (especially... gasp... the non push/fold ones) was a nice lesson too. Thank you for this great display of high stakes SNG play, I am truly impressed that you have the ability to beat a mini step 5.

Yeah I just dont think stuff like this is a big deal. You should make your preflop raises in accordance with your style, at least early in the tournament that is. Some people feel more comfortable raising more, some less, however I don't want to say that one style is just better than the other.

It's just a friendly thing to do. I don't do it at lower stakes because people tend to think it means "hah, look at the crap you folded to." But where people are more mature, it's friendly to show cards that you never got the chance to play just to make the game feel a little less competetive.

From a strategy standpoint, looking like a nice guy gets you respect on the bubble, IMHO.

I dont think its a bad had to see a flop with, and hes not in "despiration mode" quite yet.

Anyway I have a question here...
Would it be wrong to check the turn, acting like your "afraid" of the ace that came out and hopeing he would bet out with his king x on the river, regardless of the club draw?

I sometimes open limp KQs in a situation like this with barely over 10 bb's, usually with plans to min bet most flops. Otherwise I don't mind pushing too much. I don't think you can commit any amount of chips in between because stack sizes are pretty awkward at this point (as someone else stated).

i think your heads up play is far too weak, you folded the blind to villian over half the time, thats no good, you need to be playing more hands here in my oppinion, dont be afraid villian will call you every time, you gave away a lot of chips here

i dont know how correct it is or how many people will agree with me, but when heads up, i generally dont just look for a hand to push, i usually just double the blind when i play, and play most hands, i like to play a little poker, villians will fold to this often enough, if they start pushing whenever i do it, i have to adjust and start pushing too, or start doubling with hands i will call with

I'm gonna respond to a lot of things in this thread I'm sure, but the first thing I wanted to do was to respond to this one:

a) no one forced you to read it, [censored].

b) i didn't pick this sng for any reason at all. especially not for "thinking someone should learn something from it"

c) i didn't pick this one because i apparently got 2nd, as i just picked a random ministep5 from the last 2 weeks and posted it. i made sure it wasn't one that was short, because well, there's nothing interesting about losing kk to aj or whatever, and we all know that.

d) to go along with the "i didn't pick it so that other people would learn something from it" you should probably consider that when i post something like this, i do it so that *I* can learn something. this one here is the most important, so i hope you got this far before your ocd carried you away. that's right, *i* post so that *i* learn sometimes. i'm not always here to give free lessons, sometimes i try to get something out of it too.

bjb,

i've been mixing in some showing of cards in the last 3 weeks or so. i find that as another poster said, particularly late in the game and on the bubble, there are some decent effects. i'll show some bad hands they fold to, i'll show some good hands they fold to, i'll never show a bluff ever. anyway, yeah, i'm just working on mixing in a bit of showing hands lately, so i can't give a full report yet on what i think the results are at various points yet.

Citanul, two observations:

1) The KQs hand where you had like 10 BBs. Tough spot, I probably would have just open pushed and held my breath. But I totally understand the fold.

2) The hand that surprised me the most was heads up with K8s. With 600 in the blinds, I would have open pushed this. Those blinds were hardly trivial, it would be a shame to just call, miss the flop, and lose out on the 800 that would have been in there at the time.

Do you think that calling was correct, and if so, why?

yes, i thought very strongly about repopping him in that spot as well. i think i literally flipped a coin to decide if i would there.

what was interesting was that his earliest play, he was showing down a fair number of huge hands, then he continued splashing around quite a bit and showed down many fewer hands, so it was a bit tricky to figure out where he was. looking back at the moment, i think there's a good chance i was ahead here, and i probably should have flipped the coin best 2 out of 3 or something.

micro,

the kq hand there's going to be more talk about soon i guess, i'm pretty sure i should have done *something* different than just folding. like i said, i was pretty sure it's one i played crappy and lucked out in. most likely the best play here for me is to either just push or raise and run it out with the shorty if he pushes or something like that. one or the other /images/graemlins/smile.gif i haven't thought it through entirely yet.

the K3 hand i think i butchered. i probably shoudl have just pushed preflop honestly, however he wasn't limping heads up, and when someone who doesn't limp heads up limps, i tend to not be happy with my hand unless i flop good. i have this terrible feeling he had something like QQ in this spot and i suck.

i mix my raises up at almost all levels, my standard opening raise is between 75 and 100 on the 15/30 level, and it doesn't correspond at all to what my hand strength is. it sometimes corresponds to the number of hands i've played recently, or the number of hands i think i'll be playing soon, but never the hand strength unless i have a good reason to make it do so.

noah,

the argument for folding here is clearly that though other plays may be +ev, this isn't a pot that helps my stack in any fantastic way if i steal it, while it could hurt my stack horribly if i lose it. the extra 300 chips just isn't a big deal. looking at it, it appears i hadn't played a hand since my double up hand i think, certainly not a push, so that's in my favor and all. but the thing that would have been going through my mind when deciding to fold was clearly something a lot like:

"do you need this pot?"

citanul

who didn't even really want that pot very much.

citanul
09-17-2005, 11:00 AM
well, my push on the turn here was sort of double edged, or triple edged:

1) i don't think he's folding a king that often here, or at least most players aren't
2) i don't think he's folding any ace here
3) he might call with less still

i think the push itself does scream "i'm afraid of that ace" to a lot of players, while at the same time, an ace is a card that it's semi likely for him to have in his hand. i really didn't expect him to find a fold on the turn, but didn't want him to check behind, so clearly i felt pushing was the best play there. i just couldn't figure out what he'd play that way really.

new,

sometimes i let my cards dictate how i play heads up. the idea being that if i push the top x% of my cards in a situation, x% of the time, i'll have those cards. if i pick my x correctly, this is a viable strategy. sometimes you just don't get dealt good hands though. but then you remember that you're playing more than one game, i'll play thousands of heads up hands in ministep5s, and over the course of it, i'll try to play well. i know that i could push more, but the quality of cards you get dealt does even out over hte long run, so just pushing bad hands because you should be pushing isn't that great in my mind. clearly there's spots where i'm pushing any two, and even pushing any two on deeper stacks, but there's other spots where i just think that folding your 73o is quite alright thanks.

I figured that your response would be something like this, and I think that this is something that a lot of people overlook (myself included) sometimes.

If your opponent plays a really weak and predictable HU game, it's better sometimes to just keep the pots small and slowly grind them down (although the blinds have to be small enough for you to do it). Although ICM says you should just be pushing hands like this, and that it's always +$EV to do so, in some situations you can have a higher expectation for the tournament if you slow down a bit and try to play postflop with short stacks. Doing this can be dangerous though because unless you're under perfect conditions, passing up clearly +$EV spots can be very wrong.

What about psychology, though? In basically any poker format, if I've been folding a lot, I'm going to try to steal the blinds. In heads up poker, I think it's extremely important to do this because if I'm playing top x% of hands, and I've only been playing x/3% of hands, my opponent will think I have a hand in the top x/3% range when I push with 73o. Similarly, if I've been playing 2x% of hands, I'm slowing down considerably because every time I push my top x% hand, my opponent thinks I have a 2x% hand, and is thus much more likely to call me. I realize that this is more feel than anything, and maybe you didn't feel it was necessary to play aggressively, but I think that the general strategy of pushing top x% in different spots in SnGs isn't optimal, unless you're playing against someone who knows you well.

icm does not "say you should be pushing." icm says if pushing would be +ev. it doesn't take into account other strategies and tell you if pushing is the best of them. there are many spots where pushing would be +ev but other plays, like standard open raising, would be + more ev. i believe that heads up is one of the times that this is most important, as many heads up opponents play very very poorly.

well yes, i agree as well. don't take the fact that i didn't make any "plays" in this particular game to mean that i don't make "plays" ever. i agree that i probably should have put 1 or 2 randomized pushes in there, but sometimes you have enough chips around to wait a bit, as your random hand is theoretically coming the next hand, and will often be better than the hand you are dealt.

similarly, any experienced player will usually not tighten up their calling range based on how often you've been pushing, but rather tighten up their calling range based on how often you've been allowing them to steal, as if they can run you over, they have no need of running it out at 60/40. however, there's other players who will just call with the hands they're supposed to call with, regardless of the way in which you've been playing heads up.

while I did lose this match, I don’t think that it’s easy to say that out of the 8 total button hands that occurred, I played that terribly. I saw 5 paint cards, including no aces, out of the 30 total cards that I was dealt. these things happen, but I really don’t think that opening up my hand selection much more is the correct way to do things in spots like that. sometimes you just don’t get anything going. I don’t feel that bad about missing the couple of spots that were maybe pushes out of this set.

FWIW I think that hand 1 should nearly always be pushed preflop. This is how I play at least, I think that pushing is just too clearly +EV to try any alternate play. K8s is just way too strong with under 10x the BB.

Also I think that folding hand 7 is clearly wrong. T7o getting 3-1 odds and position? Its just way too tight IMO.

I play very similarly to this, especially heads up. I recently sent a complete HH to a well respected poster who ripped me a new one for not being aggressive enough in the money and heads up. I think a lot of the points he made were good because when I err, I generally am too tight shorthanded. I should probably be a bit more aggressive.

After seeing this HH from someone who plays better than me, I feel better about my play and maybe the adjustments I need to make are not as drastic as I was starting to think.

I guess this is a long way of saying thanks to citanul for starting this thread and explaining it so well.

I'll play T7 about half the time in a similar situation. Are you saying a push would always be correct there?

I think you should've played this much more aggressively. The guy doesn't look very loose, so steal the blinds. I think you out-thought these hands or something.

How loose do you think the BB is here? My default play is to push this unless I have evidence that he doesn't respect my raises or is just really loose. I may be too aggressive in spots like this though. What factors make you fold this?

No but IMO you must at least call preflop and this is what I would do. Moving allin is a bit much here. It's important not to spit in the face of math and pot odds.

Folding T7o heads up against a random hand, getting 3-1 pot odds and having position throughout the hand, is mathematically incorrect IMO.

Im sure youre right - mathmatically. HU is about more than math though.

T7o is what? a slightly less than avg. hand? I guess having position with it makes up for the fact that it isnt a good hand.

In a situation where you are HU with a guy who raises your limps, what do you do with a hand like that?

I will never fold this hand in this position. Almost no one raises your limps everytime, they always get more careful after the 2nd-3rd limp, because they suspect you are slowplaying.

Yes headsup is not all about math, but this is just too absurd for me to consider folding. 3-1 pot odds, with position and a reasonable hand! I don't believe folding can be reasonably defended here, although I suspect that a large number of people on this forum do fold in such spots.

curtains,

thanks for continuing to rip my play apart. that's what i posted it for.

i agree that hte T7 fold is wrong, especially because my one limp had not been raised.

to the poster who said he plays like this:

i don't always play exactly as shown in this hand history, but my shorthanded and heads up, particularly in this game, i clearly missed several spots. not all of them were spots i miss all the time /images/graemlins/smile.gif i'm not going to make any excuses about them, i want for me and others to learn from the mistakes i made.

the two biggy hands i believe in this hh are the KQ hand and the T7 hand so far. maybe the K3 hand is a decently worthwhile hand also. basically everything else was an abc poker play i think.

Curtains - not to beat a dead horse about the T7, but say you have a lesser hand like a T5o or something like that. Do you limp anything on the button HU if the other guy is letting you?

I do fold sometimes, and it may be incorrect to do some of the times when I fold,....but I'd never fold something like T7o here. If I ever felt like I was in a situation where stacks were too shallow to limp, then I would move allin with it.

Folding with T5o is a lot more reasonable. However if the stacks are deep I think its just bad to fold most of the time in the SB, maybe its okay to fold the bottom 5-10% of hands.
