Sorry if this has been asked before, I'm sure it has, but I don't know all the fancy market lingo so I wouldn't know how to search for this.

I have $2000 I want to invest because I'm sick of online poker. What is the best way to invest this money for optimal return with minimal risk? Thanks.

Risk and return are inversely related.

ok... how about, what's the best way to invest if I want a <20% chance of going broke, and if I want a <5% chance?

Put half in WMT, and half in GE. and never sell it.

Stick the money in an index fund, and start reading/learning about the markets.

Not really. Value investing has proven to be a less riskier way to invest and provides superior returns in the long run.
