I've been trying to improve my heads-up play lately, particularly in not paying off when it's almost clear that I'm beat. This has been tough in the early going.

6-12 home game. LP openraises, folded to me in the BB with TT. I 3-bet and he calls.

Flop is 5-4-3. I bet and he calls.

Turn is a 2. I check and fold.

Against this player, I was pleased with my fold. I was very certain he had the ace. After the hand he said "good fold, Ace Jack" but didn't show it.

what does anyone think?

Would a better play have been calling pre-flop and checkraising the flop?

If I knew the player well enough that I think he'd only bet a straight then checking and folding is OK. Against a less predictable opponent I'd be more likely to bet and fold to a raise. Your check announces that you are afraid he's got an A, and makes him more likely to bluff if he thinks you'll fold an overpair.

If you bet it's going to be almost impossible for him to bluff raise you, since it looks a whole lot like you've got an A.
