Obviously these hands are difficult to analyse without knowing how the game has been playing, how The Awesomest has been playing, etc. but I had just started watching when this hand came up so I don't know. What do you guys think of this fold? Seemed insane to me.

The fold seems completely read dependent, but my question is why is Hellmuth sitting in that game with 20bb?

hey MAY have best hand now, tons of scares cards coming on river. It's pot is small now, and he doesn't want to pay off a FULL pot bet on river, especially since there's so many scare cards he'll have to fold anyways.

And hellmuth sucks, I've been noticing a lot of pros buying in short. I notice Steve Zolotow (AmazingGrace) on stars, buying in for 400 at the 10/20 nl, or the minimum at the 100/200 limit game. Seems crazy that "PROS" do that....

barry g makes a very convincing argument for small buyins in his book, if you havent seen it.

I have read it, but it's definitely not outweighed by buying in full. Just because some strategy has pros, doesn't mean it's the correct strategy...

OK. I guess it shows what I know. Looked to me like a big laydown heads up when the flop went check, check and Mahatma could easily be trying to pick up an uncontested pot. It seemed to me like it was very likely to be a steal attempt by Mahatma after the flop got checked through and then a re-steal/semi-bluff or even a value raise with one pair by The Awesomest. But obviously I don't play in this game (or anywhere close) and so am probably way off base. In any case, here are results if anyone is interested (but I guess no one is.)

Turn (board: Jh Tc 5c 9h):

Mahatma bets $250. The Awesomest raises to $800.
Mahatma folds, showing 5h 9s. The Awesomest is returned $550 (uncalled).

The Awesomest opts to show 8h 7h.
The Awesomest has 8h 7h Jh Tc 9h: straight, jack high.

Not as fantastic as the fact that in his first hand where he VPIPed he raised preflop and got three callers. This made him very close to PCed if he bet the flop. /images/graemlins/grin.gif It was checked to him. He bet 1/3 pot. Everyone folded. He sat out and left. /images/graemlins/blush.gif

Something to consider about BarryG's point: He plays in a LIMIT mixed game where the NL games have a cap of 100k from a player per hand. When Barry buys in for the min he isn't sacrificing anything in terms of the size pot he is able to win.
