View Full Version : Attention SPM

I know, given that you are using descriptive notation, that you are likely having trouble with your candles burning out (rather than use this newfangled "electricity"), but it's your move:

1.P-Q4 N-KB3

2.N-QB3 P-KN3

or

1.d4 Nf6

2.Nc3 g6

Any other sweaters, besides myself, who think the switch to algebraic notation was a mistake?

On an unrelated note, does anybody want SPM here?

I'd like to back SPM being that we're both from Chi-town, play in the same room, and I can bum the occasional ciggeratte off him, but... After seeing his first move, my money's on Dave.

01-22-2002, 11:56 PM
Seriously, is SPM's opening move (Nf6) legit? I've never heard of developing a Night on the first move. I'm not much of a chess player, but am slightly familiar with some of the opening lines such as the Rey Lopez, etc. Which opening are you guys playing? Thanks.

didn't he just say it was the pirc/modern opening? jeeze read the posts before commenting. and it's a perfectly viable opening ( never heard of anyone making an opening blunder on the first move of a e-mail game).

01-23-2002, 01:58 AM
Kevin, if your going to critique the game you might want to get it right. I'm white. First move I made was Qp-Q4. I may be in trouble but only time will tell.

SPM...living on the edge...

01-23-2002, 03:15 AM
Now you've got him doing jumping jacks.

01-23-2002, 03:32 AM
Well, if YOU read the posts in which YOU comment on, you might have noticed I said I'm not much of a chess player. This would indicate I might know what the pirc/modern was, because he didn't refer to it as an opening. Sorry my lack of chess knowledge bothers you so.

Now go find something else to fret over...

01-23-2002, 03:34 AM
Oh, all right! I'll keep my nose out of chess posts from now on. I thought you were black.

Still, from what I understand (which is little), it is poor development to open with a night. But what do I know? I'm still trying to learn a game called hold'em.

01-23-2002, 12:58 PM
You should refer all questions to David Ottosen. It appears he is the superior player. He also answered your question.

Just learning Hold'em? Have you taken on the Mike D equation to winning poker. Call yourself a fish an no one will know you're really a shark.

Send me you new e-mail address, I tried to send you something a few days ago and it appears you moved.

SPM,...play long and prosper...

When white plays 1.d4 (or 1.P-Q4 in archaic language), the two most popular (and best) responses by black are 1...d5 and 1...Nf6.

When you are playing the Black pieces against 1.d4, the purpose of playing 1...Nf6 is to prevent White from immediately playing 2.e4 while maintaining flexibility about how to place your center pawns on later moves. If you played 1...d5, then you lose that pawn flexibility.

As White, it is definitely best to play 1.e4 or 1.d4 on the first move, especially for a beginner. And, it is best (thought, not mandatory) for Black to respond with a center pawn move as a response.

Keep asking questions. It'll make the game more fun.

1.d4 Nf6

2.Nc3 g6

3.e4 d6

4.d4 is that correct?

Nope, if you're asking if the notation is correct.

It's 4.d5 if you're trying to push your Queen pawn foward one square.

Or are you asking if the move is a good one?
